LOL :) maybe you are about to take on the national dephicit of a country? You are their favourite customer who never was :)
By the way, send me Julie's email; someone named Kristen and her roommate Tanya are always sending me stuff, so maybe we can hook them up for a 3-way.
I am not sure if she would appreciate me becoming her pimp ;) Lets hope that they might be able to scrape together some clothes, they must be freezing, i mean they don't even have any blankets or anything.

Hi all!

Well, the general opinion seems to flow towards NWN. If DS is rather linear then that doesn't really appeal to me much. Or there's HLD's suggestion which will probably happen anyway.

London was good, I even picked up a copy of Diplomacy for 1 pound. Haven't installed it yet though.

If it's not killing you to have right now, then why not wait for six months or so? The price on Dungeon Seige will drop from $45 to $30 (USD); in a year, it will probably be down to $20.

Psychologically, I have a hard time paying $60 for a computer game (NWN's MSRP), just like I can't bring myself to pay $125 to see The Eagles in concert (hell, I have a hard time paying $50 to see Jimmy Buffet play). So I was going to wait until the price dropped at the store. Fortunately, I found NWN as Sam's Club for $46 and I got it there; still, it's more than I paid for IWD a couple of years ago, but it seemed like a deal considering its full retail price.

I agree (maybe not the bit about The Eagles ;) ) i just can't bring myself to pay upwards of 30 quid for a game, it just seems strange, The most i have ever paid for a game was 32.99 that was Myst and it was also the first game i ever purchased on a PC :o I do hope no one follows the trend that NwN has sent, i don't think it right we should end up spending the same as the consoles...

The sad part is that people will shell out $60 for a computer game, especially one as hotly anticipated as NWN, which I believe will only embolden game publishers to raise prices again. The people who develop and distributed PC games aren't doing it to make you and I happy; they want to make money. I accept that they're going to price their product at the absolute upper end of what the average consumer can afford (and maybe little higher) because they know they can get some poor schlep (and all of his/her friends, too) to pay it.

I also understand that several factors go into the pricing: demand, hype, development costs, dwindling market share for PC games compared to consoles, inflation, etc. Still, when the price of a computer game goes up disproportionate to the rate of inflation ($45 for BG2 two years ago to $60 for NWN is a 33% price hike), I can't help but feel gouged a little.

On the one hand, if I don't want to pay $60 for the game, I can always wait a year for the price to drop or I can just not buy it, but on the other, since I have liked all of Bioware's other D&D products and it is superior to POR2 (which, incidentally, is now marked down to $20) I guess I can either gripe some more about how computer games are becoming unaffordable to many players or I can shut the hell up and pay a small king's ransom for the game (which I did).

I have stuck to my principles on this one and probably will for a while yet. The pricing just seems to go against my better principles, i see it as a cynical venture, i am sure NwN is excellent and was very expensive to produce but no more than any other game and when companies can still sell most for under 30 and make a profit i don't see NwN as being any different.

Medal of Honour has been selling consistently for the last few months for over 35 quid, now that tells me something, EA have told all department stores to stock it at a set price since they sell enough loads, i get the feeling there might be a similar issue with NwN, so i will be waiting for many months. The accountants and analysts did well really, i don't think most gamers have made the concious choice not to buy it if the figures are anything to go by, they have made quite a lot of money i would expect from the large marketing campaign, my hat off to them :)

There was game called Serious Sam 2 released, it was a nonesense FPS and frankly was just ludicrous, it was however fun, stick it in multiplayer put on Infinite lives and there were many hours of entertainment. This retailed for 20 pounds which is just pittance compared to a game twice it's price, i am not sure if i would get that much more fun out of NwN since it's longevity seems tied to the on-line environment, one which i can't afford or support at the moment, someone care to prove me wrong?

Maybe i am just being too cynical and should just buy into the hype...

Sorry, but I don't agree with this. DS is Diablo, except not as good and with a bit of BG added (i.e. party members. Yay.) D2 also had seamless graphics - a great thing, I must admit. NWN's loading screens are really starting to drive me up the wall, especially as there are less hints than in BG2 it seems, and many more/much longer loads.

So would you be up for a game of Diplomacy after our current one is over? I'll be GMing I think :) A quid isn't bad, but you can get a very good free client on the PC free: http://realpolitik.sourceforge.net/

@Sleepy: how much is NWN retailing for? I got my copy for £30 from gameplay...is it more in the shops?

I think it was only £1 for next day delivery (aka you'll get it in two or three days) I'm not entirely sure as I split it with a friend, but I think it was only £1, but postage is usually free if you don't take next-day.

Gotta figure out how to play it first, but yep, i'd be interested.

As for the big decision, I've decided to follow HLD's advice and just get both. DS arrivves today and NWN should be here in a couple of days. Problem solved. :D

It's so much easier when you're not in "the program" . . . you don't have to make sure that your wife hasn't already spent your money on something like Longaberger baskets or Pampered Chef, nor do you have to explain why components and software appear (unannounced) in the mail.

What a neat solution... :D

As for the Diplomacy, there were only three of us out of seven that had ever played before at the start of this game. Now it's just us three left as major powers (apologies to CM, I know you're still with us in spirit and your one unit will conquer all one day, just like Tiax :p ) so I would suggest that you at least get the hang of the rules, as that was the major cause of problems early on. Depending on the number of people interested, it might be possible to run two separate games, one for people who are experienced at the game and have played before, and one for complete newbies (: D) so that they aren't quickly out-maneuvred. Still all in my head so far, in a month or so things will start happening probably.
