I've just started a little private movie club with some friends, the plan is that we'll meet once a month or once every second month, have a nice dinner and watch a movie together. It used to be a book club, but two of the participants have recently become parents, and thus don't have the energy to read books at the moment.

When we discussed what we are going to watch for the first movie meeting next Saturday, somebody suggested Molin Rouge. It turned out two people had already seen it - one absolutely loved it and thought it was wonderful, whereas the other totally hated it and thought it was the worst movie she had ever seen.

That was my initial response, but then I heard from somebody I think has a very good taste in film, that it was good. Perhaps I'll see it later, although this thread isn't exactly encouraging me

Not that I find Tom Cruise very inspiring ...I've always considered him quite vacuous....

I can only agree with you and Ysh. He seems to have developed into a slightly better actor now than he was when he was very young, but actually that doesn't say a lot since he was terrible lacking to start with.

I don't think I know anybody who is a fan of either Kidman or Cruise.

I actually saw Moulin Rouge in a preview screening, so it was pre-hype... and while I didn't vehemently dislike it, I didn't particularly like it, either, and I was very surprised at the critical acclaim it got. I actually quite like musicals

o DW, I hope you're not implying bad things about Grease!!

), and I usually find Baz Luhrmann's flamboyant directorial style rather refreshing, but this one just didn't hit the mark. There were definitely good things about it - yes, the costumes were good, there were some interesting moments in the soundtrack, it was funny at times... but the whole film left me feeling rather underwhelmed. Still, I know a lot of people who love it, so I guess it's very subjective.

Oh, don't talk to me about Dancer in the Dark... I got as far as a minute into the first song, in the factory, and I couldn't stand it any longer and had to leave... (which is not generally a very responsible thing to do when you're the projectionist

but it was that bad...)

Personaly I would have enjoyed a LotR musical rather much. There are many songs in the books, And it would have been fun to see something different instead of that boring action movie they put up.

I think the only music-oriented movie I've ever seen that I've truly enjoyed was Carlos Saura's Tango ....although that was more about dance and involved a lot of very tightly -controlled drama.......

The songs are quite cool

I saw a play of The Hobbit once... I don't think it was a musical though

I don't think it was the song so much... it was just the film was so bloody depressing and dull, and then suddenly Bjork's bursting into song in the middle of the factory... I just couldn't take it

I love Björk's music, so I decided not to see Dancer in the dark

The only musical type stuff I've seen and enjoyed, was the Dennis Potter TV-series "Pennies from heaven" and "The singing detective". They are very...eh, special.

Well yes...

I like her music, just not a big fan of that movie

If only I hadn't seen it for free, I would have asked for my money back...

I dont think it was that depressing, About everything she dreamt of did eventually come true.

I didn't stay to see that much of it

I think if you're going to do a musical, then it ought to seem like a musical... Dancer in the Dark was like a serious drama, which makes it all the worse when she starts singing...

As I interpreted the movie all the singing she did was only her dreaming at first. Then when she finally was hanged It was reality.

@Dottie you could well be right... if I actually saw the whole thing I might even agree with you... but if I find a movie so bad I don't stay until the end, I don't really give it much thought

There are very few movies that I walk out of.

To be honest I was about to do the same since that "artistic" camera work made me feel sick. Fortunatly I was bored atm and in the end I did like it rather much.

That is part of my problem, i also think she is just well boring, she always strikes me as a pretty exterior that is belied by a rather spiteful and uncaring interior...not that i really have the necessary facts to back that up, it is just a gut feeling
