Well played Mr Flibble - that fixed the DOS problem. Now if only I could get sound in those DOS games... :D (Roll on your Win 2k magic again plz ;) )

Unfortunately it still doesn't shut down :( any other ideas?

Thanks a lot for your help both of you. :)
I highly recommend visiting this website called NT Compatible. They have a pretty lengthy list of games that tells whether they are compatible with Win2k, WinXP or WinNT, and tells you the fix for playing older games. Also their message board is pretty good--the most knowledgable person on that board is Dos Freak.
Here's the link:

Did you run an upgrade from ME to 2k or did you perfrom a clean install? Judging from the dos issues earlier, I'm guessing you performed an upgrade.

It is possible that once the DOS, shutdown, and sound issues are resolved, you may run into more troubles. Flibble can probably get you through all of the issues, however, it might be easier to do a clean install.

just a suggestion.

I never got back to you guys on this, but thanks to all of you. My computer now shuts down properly (I'm not quite sure why though :D ) and the DOS crash is fixed.

However, Voodoo, that VDMS thing you suggested doesn't seem to work. I do right-click and Run with VDMS, but the program doesn't actually run.
