Roleplayin g VS Powergaming: which do you prefer?

Well it's very nice to have one char in your party with all the best stuff on. I have went around and grabed all the stuff that does the best job for protecting against magic users and the like and put it on my fighter. That way when I have some tough mage to go against I can use him to charge and kill the mage without puting much thought into it. As it seems he is pretty good at running around on his own to
which if I want to get through something quick I just order him to go out on his own and kill everything while the group hangs back. I guess it is hack and slash but somtimes i feel like not puting a ton of effort into each battle

IMO, roleplaying is when you do what your character would most likely do according to his class/alignment/stats/personality.
