Soooo - this is where this thread moved to then. Hmmm - I wondered why I had been hiding in shadows for so long awaiting a response on the BGII board (which admittedly this thread did not belong). You know, statements made then never quantified?
Anyhow being of Saxon/Celtic origin (Mongrel! you cry!) this was my response there. I just wanted to say my sixpenneth worth, you know being English and all that!
We need to remember that the original posting referred to did not discuss a true English race, merely the relevance of London and American accents in the Middle Ages. This subsequent thread went on to deny that England (never mind America!) was even a country in the Middle Ages...
I did not realise that the purity of the 'English' race was being discussed, only the relevance of certain accents in what, the middles ages? In which case the '****ney' and American accents would not have been relevant either.
The land, now known in English as England, was populated before the Saxons, Normans, and Romans. Though we would have been leading a more druidic, heathen and less 'civilised' lifestyle (and some of us still do!) - we would have still had means of communication.
Like any tribes anywhere else in the world, the 'kingdoms' of Celts and Picts were practising genocide before the 'introduction' of the 'civilised' churches and faiths, and these battles were high still under Henry VIII and his Church of England crusaders. (And still go on to this day, less bloody though, with even the Cornish claiming not to be English....)
So we are diluted by invading influences. Influences we have a lot to thank for.
So, regarding the purity of race, unless you are a Basque, no-one here can claim it. And regarding the accuracy of accents in BG - then maybe we should all be playing the German version with some of our NPCs being Italian and Mongolian.
Let's face it - it is a game for crying out loud! A bit (no a lot) of fun that should not spiral down to discussions so unrelated. Don't get me wrong - I am not just pointing at you at99 - there was another thread that could have deteriorated just as quickly (and probably has). It is just a general personal opinion. I do not mean to upset anyone or accuse anyone directly.
Personally I believe some of these threads are getting a little bit off subject and I would not be too disappointed to see them removed, especially if they are causing debate over personal comments and issues raised. (Forum rule No 6)
Besides - we all speak the same language on this board - well most of us anyway! hehe!
Happy GAMING everyone! let's get back to playing!
Hmm. Yes. Well my name translated does actually mean 'pure' in greek. Oh no! now we have greek undertones...
And King Arthur was a Taltos - ask the Talamasca!
