It might also be a cultural thing. Brits are generally, at group level, much more polite and less outspoken about such things as Swedes.

Many people, mostly schoolmates, but even some of my friends and boyfriends, have openly said things like "well, it's just because the way you look" when I've told them I'm happy about a job I've got or that a person has been nice to me.
When I got the most attractive intership during my psychologist education, most people in my class attributed this to my looks and were quite hostile towards me for a long time. When I got my current job, I was still a student, and I was happy as a larch. I had been taking full time courses in biology, medicine, neuroscience etc, parallell to my full time psychologist studies since the first year. I got this job, and people around me seemed to forget all about my studying. Instead my classmates and even some of my friends, started saying it was all because I look good, I would never have got the job otherwise.
The list goes on and on. And it's not a feminist issue - most people who have said those things have been women.

Well, enough whining. I haven't thought about this for a long time since it's been less of a problem since I quit university, but now when I think about it, I realize how many thousand times people have said those things to me :(

There is a concept called "the Swedish envy". Maybe Swedes are more prone to envy than other cultures.

That must be great! :) Piano and guitar are the only intruments I've played. I'd love some lessons :) Trombone or trumpet would be great :)

The people who don't know me well don't envy anything about me. The people who do envy my intelligence.

Some admire my musical talent, but I only know three instruments (piano, clarinet or bass clarinet, and violin) and how to sing. I like piano too much to focus much on anything else.

Of course, I envy some of my friends' wisdom. (Let's just say I waste the intelligence).

I envy people that can just fit in, and be friends with everyone. I *can't* warm up to new people quickly. I envy people who don't look like anyone else. I envy people who will look cool no matter what they wear. From my face, I have the look of a nerd, which I hate being called. I dress up in baggy pants and stuff, because it reflects who I am. Just people judge me by my face, and I hate that.

Some envy me because I am knowledgable and smart. I'm not sure, because no one has really told me.

EDIT: Just adding a story. My friend envies me and I envy him. HE has the looks and he is outgoing and has average intelligence. I don't have the looks, or the people/social comfort he has, but I have the intelligence. We are best friends and are complete opposites.

I'm not sure if this is out going or not, but on the day of football games, at my school, me and a fellow player do some strange things. We walk around the school wearing our boxers/shorts, knee high white and purple football socks on our ears, and feet, wearing our jersy's, and a sheep ties.

My question: What do you envy in other people? Their looks? Money? That they get all the gals/guys you's like to have? Their talents?

Yes :D

As for the other part - well I don't think I have anything others would want

I know what you are up to.

I should have guessed it when you send me that mini brain scanner that you wanted me to wear when i post. (by the way i dont think it works it keeps saying 'reading not possible')

So you found the wierdest bunch of people on the net and now you are analysing them for your next research project and of course the nobel price.

I dont know how it fits in with your plans for world domination but i will... your little plan wont succeed.

About your first question. i envy all those pepol that get research grants. sigh.

second question. I have a really nice leather jacket.

ROFL :D :D The scanner said "reading not possible"? Hm, how would you like a visit to my lab? All expenses paid, of course :D

I suppose the leather jacket doesn't really improve the conditions for your research :(

On a serious note, I think the difficulties to get grants for research that doesn't look like it's having an immediate money making potential, is one the big issues in science in general. Basic research in all fields, as well as meta-science and fields like history or cultural studies, are very difficult to get grants for. If politicians are deciding beforehand what scientific areas look lucurative or not, the very idea of science is sort of lost. :(
