Offside, (in european football?) is when an attackin player is "ahead" (closer to other teams goal) of the defending player closest to his goal, at the time of the ball being passed to him. (not when he recives the ball)
(did you understand this? :D )
It is a tricky rule.

...a1
g.....d
........a2
a2 passes the ball to a1 and a1 is offside

....a1
g..d
........a2
a2 passes to a1 and a1 is not offside (online)

i know how it works, just using an offside trap is difficult in the middle of a game
And that's the bottom line, 'cos Stoner Cold said so!

Oh - I misuderstood you then.
Well actually if your team is use to each other it is quite simple (but simplicity can often fail).
Just be sure that your center defender (or one of them) useally plays furthest towards the goal, so he is the only one that needs to move a couple of step forward for the trap to spring :)
(of course the reason such a trap fails most often, is because the wing-defender is sleeping and not paying attention to the middle defender :D )

Please excuse my excitement and bear in mind what a momentus occasion...

5-1!
5-1!
5-1!

Ohhhhhh!!! Michael Owen, Michael Michael Michael Oooowwen

Ohhhhhh!!! Michael Owen, Michael Michael Michael Oooowwen

What a most fantastic result!!!!

2-1 acceptable - 5-1 unbelievable

Germany 1 (after 6 minutes) England 5 at full time (I cannot cope with the excitement )

@Stoner Cold - the word 'Soccer' is an abreviation of the word 'Association' as in Association Football...

As for the offside rule - in order for a pass to be on-side, the recipient must be at least in line with - but not beyond - the opposition's last line of defence (excluding the goal keeper) AT THE TIME the ball is released from the deliverer...

If the ball is passed to him just as he runs beyond the last defender - the recipient is offside...I hope that helps ;)

oh, i always wondered where they got soccer from? but, wouldnt it be simpler just to nametheir new sport handball or something rather than try and change the name of an already popular and established game?

argh. i know how offsides and offside traps work. its just difficult to rememeber how to use them or use them at all when your running around the pitch in the middle of an actual game

Just out of interest, how long has American Football been around? The earliest registered UK 'Association' Football league teams were before 1890s. Rugby football followed soon after, where during a league soccer game a player picked up the ball and ran with it...

American Football resembles Rugby League more than 'soccer' and soccer has been around for years longer... :)

Well there is actually a big sport in the world called "Handball" (well on danish translated into english) - here at least Denmark is pretty good in the women-leauge
(Got one of the 2-3 best clubs in the world, and a good national team)

not 100% sure, but: football has been around, unofficaly, for hundreds of years. its beeen pro for a while now, i dunno how long. its been around longer than american football has been.

i know how rugby was started. and, FYI, its called rugby because it was started at some school or other called rugby

Ok - so are we arguing the same point here? Football IS soccer... ;) 'Soccer' is NOT a new version of football it IS football as in Association Football - not as in American Football... :)

Hehe - Stoner Cold - T'is great to be arguing about the same thing and both being right! ;)

Re offside. Leave a central defender back. Have your remainding defenders play just in front. As your opposition pass the ball forward, have the same central defender run forward to play the 'recipient' off-side.

It sounds easy, but it does take a lot of practice to get the timing and communication right... :)

Average Joe: You wouldn't by chance be a Dallas Stars fan? I have loved Hockey for a long time and it is the best sport.

If you're a Dallas Stars fan, I might tell you that I am a huge fan of the Los Angeles Kings and we are now mortal enemies. :D ;)
