I thought it was pretty universal. PE teachers all got post grad qualifications in advanced sadism, with special merit in belittling and sarcasm, did they not? I was lucky, I only had to do it for a year and then I managed to swing extra maths instead. And I hate maths

You were lucky, I had PE every year from Infant up my last year in Secondary School and while I was in Infant and Junior schools I had to swim, which I always hated and never got the hang of.

*shrugs* It's a prequisite...

They were more 'macho' than weird, though I suppose the two can and will go together.
The last year or two of PE wasn't that bad at least, they increased the lesson length from one hour to 1 hour and 45mins and they decided to give us a choice on what we wanted to do or at least a couple of options where we had none before.

And there was the occasional interesting sport too. Badminton was quite good.
