The Atlantis myth is an exciting myth, but it is clear it has no historical reality. It is however interesting how the myth has become so popular and widespread.

You dont believe that the island called "Thera" in the Mediterranian was Atlantis? I mean there was an enormous erruption that took out a civilization that was believed to be ahead of its time, slightly. This erruption absolutely destroyed the island. And people are saying that theyve found a crater-like part of the ocean floor where there could have been an erruption. Also they believe that they found some pottery fragments, indicating civilization existed there. You are sceptical about this theory? I mean, I truly believe that Thera existed and there was an erruption...and all the other stuff I just said...

There are several references to different island cultures in the Mediterranian, and people who believe in the mythical Atlantis often mix together lots of old myths (also from other cultures) with Plato's original account. It is doubtful how many sources refer to the same thing, and it is also doubtful whether the sources that clearly refer to the same Atlantis as Plato, are independent. Most experts think they are not.

If we stick to Plato's Atlantis, the advanced island culture that was destroyed 9000 years before Plato's time, I am convinced this never existed. The eruption of Thera which is believed to have destroyed the Minoean culture, occured around 1500 BC, thus only about 900 years before Plato's time. Is it of course possible that Plato might have taken inspiration from this event, but the Atlantis he wrote about, has probably never existed, it was, just like the Republic, not an existing place but a place Plato used to illustrate his ideas.

OK-thanks for clearing that up. My Greece and Rome teacher said we would talk about it in class and have it in a unit, but we never got around to it, so I never reached a great understanding of it. That statement I had before was basically glued together via, things Ive randomly read and researched. But, yes, its funny to think exactly what everybody defines Atlantis. There are so many different and random rumors about Atlantis.

@AC Its all good. It can be an interesting subject if you are into a lot of history and/or ruins/disasters. The exact stuff I absolutely love to learn about.

I'm more of a sunken ship historian. Two of my personal favorites were the commonly-known Titanic and the less-publicized Coolidge.

Why didnt you tell me!? Thats great. I know of the Coolidge, but not a whole lot about it. Was that a schooner of some sort? I just dont remember....

Well, you never asked me.

I've heard of some of those ships before, but don't know a whole lot about any of them. Since I'm nice, I'll share some brief knowledge about the Coolidge.

National Geographic actually did an article about this ship... This is what got me hooked

The ship was 22k-tons and sailed from San Francisco to the Orient, mostly as a luxery ship for passengers. When it sank, it was actually carrying soldiers in the 43rd Infantry Division in WW2. It sank on October 26, 1942.

Well, what happened was that in the fog, the members on board didn't see the warning signal lights from the shore of San Fran. THe ship was heading straight into a minefield and nobody on board knew about it. Then they hit a mine and the ship began to sink.

The first word to the men on board was that they were to take on thier normal duties. The captain had reassured everybody that the ship was "unsinkable" (Strange how this "unsinkable" bit seems to make it's way onto all major ship wreckage stories.

). 20 minutes later, everybody was commanded to abandon ship when the entire lowest level of the ship became submerged (That's when the Captain got the idea.

)

Amazingly, after hitting two mines and sinking, only five men died, leaving about 5435 left in the water to be rescued by thier allies up on shore.

THis ship truly was beautiful: I've seen a lot of pictures of the "Before and After" scenarios. It's a darn shame that it had to happen.

I watched part of it, actually witnessed history too, the first play of the game, TB returned the kickoff 95 yards for a TD, first kick return for a touchdown ever in franchise history, regular OR pre-season

I turned it on in the second quarter with about 6 minutes left. The score was 7-0. Now I know how that score was created. Sounds like a real defensive battle. I should check espn.com for the news. But, again, its only the preseason, I hardly care about the results. I mean the Patriots lost, I hardly even knew about it, let alone care about it. I was paying more attention to individual efforts and development. Thats what really counts at this stage.

And Buffalo thought he was going to be the next big QB in the NFL. Turns out he was a giant bruise instead. He just got injured too easily. He was fragile. Besides he had little skill in the pocket. Buffalo had a decent team when Flutie was QB. You notice that as soon as Buffalo put Rob Johnson as the starter, they started to lose? And then when Flutie replaced him they won again? I mean even the QB who replaced him last year was better (I cant believe I forgot the replacement's name!

Im so ashamed!). Regardless, Brad Johnson is better, but I was always a fan of King. He was good too.

Buffalo needed to be burned to the ground for pulling Flutie before the first round of the playoff a couple years ago. They lost a lot of respect with that move IMO. How do you bench the QB who got you into the playoffs, because his back-up was "taller"

I am still anxious to see the Skins in the real season. I know, 37-30 Vs the panthers, but it was 17-3 when the defensive starters where in the game, and Car only gained 13 total yards to that point

Speaking of the Panthers, they got a steal with DeShaun Foster in the second round. The kid is impressive
