"Godless" Clerics aren't truly godless, but have not dedicated themselves to one god in particular. They sort of worship the whole pantheon. This has been in D&D since the dawning of time. :D

I believe Aerie does this in some way, since she's not an active Baervan Wildwanderer priestess anymore. She mentions this in some romance dialog.

Hey Nippy - I'm asking around a bit to see what's going on with the group - I am interested in playing a cleric, but I have no idea if there is room in the wing, the guild or in Argyle.

Studying up on those 3e rules - what are the best stats, skills, and feats for a cleric? What is the best 'simple' weapon (since clerics get free simple weapons proficiencies) What about the best 'simple' ranged weapon?

Anyway if the wing or the guild is closed I'm sorry for spamming up the thread, let me know and I'll edit my post out.

There is always room for people, especially seeing as the 50+ members we have now, might not be dedicated when the game comes out, or find it to difficult to survive in MP or other stuff, our numbers can go severely up or severely down when the game hits :D
BTW the BoTB doesn't official exsits in Argyle before it is created in-game as a guild, wich could/would take some time, so our out-game number is irrelevant to Argyle, it is the in-game number we get that has meaning :)


As for a cleric.
You should try the character editor placed you your BG2 disk #1.
But Wisdom is needed for spellcasting (to cast you need 10+spell-level, so 19 wisdom is needed when you cast 9 lvl. spells)
and affects your willpower save throw.
Charisma determines how many times you can turn undead a dead and effectivness thereof (IIRC) - so if that is importent is up to you. Then there are the ordinary - Intelligence gives you skillpoints, strenght gives more meele damage, dex = range damage +
influences your reflex save throw and con = HP and fortitude savethrow.

as for skills stats and feats, it all depends on the type of cleric you wish to play. knowledge is a must. charisma helps, as turn undead checks are dependent on it. constitution, strength, and dexterity are dependent on the character you play. Constitution should be at least second of these three, if not first, since concentration checks (casting spells under stress, such as during battle) are dependent upon constitution. If you plan on wearing heavy armor, dexterity should be the lowest, as the dex bonuses don't apply with heavier armor. If you wear light armor, as my travelling friar will, then dexterity is more important.

my skills and there bonuses are

STR 10 (Even)
CON 10 (Even)
DEX 15 (+2) for the ambidexterity feat
INT 12 (+1)
WIS 14 (+2)
CHA 14 (+2)

I WILL INCREASE WISDOM EVERY FOUR LEVELS

When possible, use even numbered stats, as bonuses increase by even numbers. I placed 15 for dexterity, because i want the ambidexterity feat (use both hands) to use a quarterstaff as a double weapon. OTHERWISE, i would have put dexterity as 14, and raised constitution to 12

Strength and Constitution are both average. I chose higher intelligence over constitution to give my character more SKILL points per level.

Hopefully, my character will find ways to magically improve his constitution, but stocking up on the CONCENTRATION SKILL is a definite. HEALING SKILL is important until about level 9.

As a friar, I gave my character many nature related skills and diplomatic skills. Also, since my first level is a thief, and i will get a second thief level later on, i stocked up on many spot, hide, and listen points.

You will have to base your skills on the role you wish your character to play for its party and world.

The type of character i created is probably rare. Most clerics will favor heavy armor and battle type skills. I however chose a light weight, fast moving cleric accustomed to nature and diplomacy, as much of his life is spent on the road. Not the best SUPER character, but one i will enjoy roleplaying.

BTW regarding feats and skills and stuff, one should really plan that out now, since we don't know what/how many will ship with NwN - they are not going to work in all skills and feats from original 3.ed but will proberly also add some of their own.

Sounds cool Joe! I have been looking at the PHB and the character generator some. I certainly see the attraction in taking the first level as a thief for sure - they get all the cool skills and plenty of points to boot. The cleric preferred skills are limited - concentration and heal are OK, but it is also possible to take other skills cross-class. Another tempting option is to take the first level in fighter - free proficiency in all martial weapons, extra HP, and an extra feat is pretty nice!

I have been looking at stats like:

for a 28 point-buy pure class cleric. As a human this cleric would start out with 2 feats. My debate is whether to take one of these as a martial or even exotic (bastard sword) weapon proficiency. I envision a fighting cleric with armor (eventually heavy armor when $ permit) and a shield for maximum AC. The problem is that at early levels ranged combat is ultra important and having a shield limits you to one-handed ranged weapons i.e. darts and slings, which blow. Oh well. We'll see when the game comes out how things like weapon switching work.

I wonder if they will include the rule about forcing a healing spell in the place of a prepared spell of the same level - this is a very nice rule for clerics because you can memorize all "hold person" spells (effective in early levels), then cast heal spells instead once the battle is over using the slots you have unnecessary 'hold persons' in - adds a lot of flexibility to the cleric.

@ The Jaker, feel free to join, we need characters. :) RE Your stats, they look good. :) For my Paladin my stats are:

Str 14
Con 14
Dex 14
Int 10
Wis 12
Cha 12

I feel that this is a good balance and I could increase any stat to get good bonuses. :)

Talking seriously now, we need to sort out the ranks. I feel that seeing as no one will vote for each other or decide I will have to sort out the ranks myself, which is no problem.

This is my decision for the Holy Council:

I wanted to get one of each class in the rank but there are no Monks, so I'll go for the next best thing,

The rest are Holy Warriors. :)

I thought about starting as a ranger. They automatically receive the ambidexterity and two-weapon fighting skills. Unfortunately for them, that doesn't include double weapons (one weapon that can be used as two i.e. my quarterstaff) :( . So, since i would have to get the feats anyways, i went with a thief for first level.

Also, you're right JAKER, i very much hope they implement the "forcing a healing spell" as you call it. That provides low-level clerics with much more flexibility. It always bugged me in BG2 that i had to devote so many cleric spell slots to healing, thereby not using them as effectively in other areas.

You're exactly right, Nippy. I love that whole monk/ranger in-tune with nature ruse :) . However, i wanted to be a healer, so i ended up with the character i have now. I'm also happy i was able to make the thief work into my character, as i wanted his history to be that of a converted rogue, yet still rogue at heart. :D

Wow, that's unexpected. I'll do what i can to help the guild. My only concern is finding time to play. It's prolly no big deal, as i won't be TOO busy by the time NwN comes out. Good thing it isn't out now (as much torture as it is), because i'd never have time to play.

By the way Nippy, you do realize i'll be starting as a thief :o . Maybe you didn't realize that. My first level will be thief, and at second level i'll become an official cleric. Hope that works.

Aye, but using the character generator, it certainly doesn't hurt to mess around with skills and feats, as it will help you to understand the type of character you wish to play. Once you know your identity, you can change 3rd Edition skills and feats with NwN skills and feats accordingly.

It's not a problem, if anyone has a gripe bash 'em round the head or give 'em latrine duty. :D :D

Seriously, you can start official duties at lvl 2, until then you can hold the rank if you want.
