Help with Ranger Build

Post by CrimsonPard »

I'm a new player and would like to build a Ranger type. If there is already a thread with this idea, please let me know. Otherwise, what do you think would be a good build?

I'm thinking of Dark Elf as a race. I'd also like to be able to maximize my attribute bonuses when leveling up, so can you help me choose the skills?

Hm. I've not tried a Ranger type, but I think you should take Stealth as your specialisation, because you will need Marksman and Sneak and Light Armour among your Major skills, and these will help build up your Agility and Speed Attributes.
I would suggest you also take a Melee weapon skill to build up your Strength. That gives you 4 of the 7 skills, but only 3 attribute builders. But not all your Attribute builders need to be Major Skills. :)
A Ranger doesn't need a huge amount of Intelligence or Magica, but you need some, so take Restoration, which will add to your Willpower (thus adding to your protection against magic). And it is a darn useful magic as well!
That makes 5 major skills, and 4 Attribute builders.
Your own personal preferences are the most important to consider, though. :)

I'd also take Alchemy, because IMHO it fits a ranger well.

Will choosing those skills make it so that I level up too quickly? Also, what about birth sign and choosing my bonus attributes? I'm thinking about choosing thief for sign and endurance and luck for the bonus attributes. What do you think?

Thief is quite a good sign for a Ranger, imo, and you get 3 attributes boosted, which has to be good! On the other hand...

The Warrior is also good, because it give you +10 to Strength and Endurance.

I wouldn't choose Luck for a bonus, if you take the Thief sign, because the Thief gives you +10 Luck as well as +10 Agility and Speed, so it seems a bit of a waste, to me. But if you take the Warrior, then taking Luck may be useful.
Dark Elves are a bit lacking in Willpower (and Endurance if a female char). Now, you may think it doesn't matter to be lacking in Willpower, but it makes a difference to your resistance to spells, as well as the rate your magica restores - and with low magica that matters!

Oh! About leveling up too quickly: If you are careful not to have more than 4 Stealth skills (if you are a Stealth Specialisation char) in your Major skills, you should be ok. And if you are going to use a lot of Alchemy, I would suggest you don't have it as a Major skill.
