Berserker/thief

Post by the Refrigerator »

After getting halfway through the game as a ½ orc barbarian I decided to restart as a berserker/thief, also ½ orc. I want to specialize in dual wielding and long swords. I thought it over for quite some time and I think this would make a nice main character – I’d like a good scout that can backstab and that can hold out some time before the cavalry arrives. If scouting is not called for, I like my man to be in the first line anyway. I would not like the main character to be anywhere but in the front, he is the leader after all and should set the example (that is one reason I don’t like to play wizards).

When exploring dungeons, I used to put a thief NPC up in front, to do scouting or to detect traps. But when the trouble starts, I want them in the back shooting arrows or something like that. And this kind of maneuvering is always difficult in tight spaces. This problem is less annoying in BGII than in BGI, where you couldn’t push someone aside, but still it’s bugging me. That is why I decided to play a berserker/thief.

So here are my questions:

Has anyone ever played a berserker/thief? Are there things worth mentioning regarding this combination? Is it possible to go berserk while hiding in shadows for a backstab bonus? At what level should I dual class? And finally: do you think it will be a good class for TOB (I would think so, because it’s all extra dungeons)?

Only humans can dualclass. Only dualclass characters can choose a kit (for their first class). So you'll have to play a human berserker/thief or a half-orc fighter/thief.

You can go berserk in stealth but:
if you wan't to scout you can use wizards eye no risks what so ever + it has stealth
if you want a strong leader (tank) bers./thief is not the best way to go.
but it doesn't sound like you want to have the best charecter but a charecter after your head that has to be able to do some things (to make the game cooler and easier to "live into" right?)
I didn't find the bers./thief that effcient but on of the great charms of the game is to find out this for yourself. :)

I everybody from Holland in this forum?? there sure is a lot (witch is not a bad thing of course) :) :D

@Astafas: Thanks for pointing out that a half orc can't dual from berserker to thief. This kind of thing is better to realise at the start than halfway through.
Maybe an elven fighter/thief is more what I'm looking for but I also want to have a romance with Viconia. Ahh! Decisions, decisions...

@Garcia: Why don't you think a berserker/thief is efficient? I would think the berserkers strength and weapon expertise would make a great backstabber. I read somewhere else it is possible to backstab with long swords.

Or do you think a Kensai/thief might be better because thiefs get penalties when using armour?

Human Stalker :)
I love that class

They can:
-Hide in shadows at +20%
-Backstab (a bit less powerful than a thief, but can definatley connect more often due to better THAC0)
-Can dual wield for those close encounters
**or**
-Switch to bows if things get hairy
-Can cast healing and support spells
