changing player appearance

Is is possible to change the player's appearance or portrait once you have started the single player game? At least, is it possible for someone not technically proficient.

You can change your avatar by pressing the ~ key then typing "DebugMode 1" enter, then "SetAppearance x" x = 1-6 which are the playable races in the game. I also think there is a way to change your portrait but I don't know how, I am sure someone here knows though.

What I want to change is skin color, hair, portrait, etc.

I would assume you can do that by altaring your saved games, but I have no idea how, sorry.
