40 level in BG II ToB

Post by Drakron Du´Dark »

I usually dont start topics but since this have been brought up many times I will post this.
Originally posted by Kevin:

We had to choose somewhere to stop and 40th level was what we chose. 40th level is ludicrously high by any standards. What may not be understood is that we did this to essentially remove the XP cap. A normal run through of Shadows of Amn/Throne of Bhaal will leave you at approx 30th level or 5 million xp (level, of course, varies according to class). The extra 10 levels or 3 million XP is in place for those people who play the game several times via reimporting and other people who might reach the cap abnormally soon. The majority of players will not reach the cap but everything is filled out to 40th for those who do.

If there was no cap whatsoever, we would have to fill out 2DAs for all classes to any number that the player might be able to reach by reimporting over and over again. Our solution was to place a cap that just isn't attainable through normal play, hence, effectively removing the cap. Die hard players like solo players or people who import back into the game over and over again could reach the 40th level/8million XP cap.

Now I belive that fears from "core" AD&D PnP fans will be put to rest.
Any questions?

...And you *know* there will be some players who complain about a 40th level cap. Image

<duh mode on>

Level 40? That's nothing! I wanna get my half-orc paladin sorcerer monk kensai multiclass booger picker to level 100! Why? Duh! It's a round number- it's gotta be good!

<duh mode off>

And there you have an example of kvetching about the level 40 experience cap.

Incidentally, at 8 million, are all classes at level 40, or is this in reference to a fighter class or something? If my vague picturing of the exp tables holds water, 8 million exp might make for a level 40 fighter, but probably a level 50 rogue.

Anyone out there obsessive enough to do the math?

Its level 40 for all, although the designer guy said that some, like the rogue, will get to high lvls really fast and the last few levels will take them a really long time. (He used a thief for the example that the only lvl that takes them a really long time is 39 to 40.)

These 40 levels are very interesting. At least it will be some good reason to play later this game to reach the xp cap in expansion.

I really do not care if it is with accordance with AD&D rules because I just want to enjoy this game more and more.

What is more whether one of endings is that we become the god of murder or there is good possibility to become other god then 40th level is appreciated thing.

if we can reach level 40, that means our sorcerers will be able to cast imprisonment. So if we can import our ToB chars. to SoA we will be able to imprison Irenicus in the Asylum, Bodhi too!! MWUAHAHAHAHA

Well i'm not sure about imprisoning those 2. You can't use instant death spells on them so i doubt imprisoment will work.
