So I get to NW, and at some point over the first few stops, poof, Armor of Loyalty seems to appear in my inventory . . . where'd it come from?
Oh, and I assume at some point I'll stumble across a book or something that gives me the recipes I need for crafting various items?

The armor of loyalty is a quest reward for solving the problems in Highcliff. It is given to you by the village elder just before you depart for neverwinter. He calls it a village relic or heirloom i think.
And i don't think you will ever come across a book detailing all the crafting recipes in the game. Your best bet would be to find guides in sites such as [url="http://nwvault.ign.com/"]this.[/url] [url="http://www.gamefaqs.com/computer/doswin/file/922154/45560"]Here[/url] is a list i obtained from gamefaqs.
