Worth getting?
Worth getting?
Hi all! 1st things 1st: Sorry if there's a better forum to put this in, just move it or whatever you gotta do to it.
2nd: Okay, just finished The Witcher, and I'm thinking about getting another RPG (since my grades just aren't low enough, yet), and I was wondering how you all would recommend Planescape: Torment. Of course, I've considered other options (Jade Empire and Mass Effect, to name a couple), but Planescape is the game that everybody talks about as having one of the greatest storylines ever, that I still haven't played. Just wondering what you all have to say about this game (or any others; hence my doubt about which forum this belongs in).

Most definitely! It's certainly unique and very fun. This game contains so much more content than the two you mentioned. I found them very boring, while with PS:T (which I went out of my way to get) was simply amazing. I played it non stop, even after beating it.
You may want to check these RPG games out too:
Baldur's Gate
Baldur's Gate II: Shadows of Amn
Baldur's Gate II: Throne of Bhaal
Fallout
Fallout 2
Vampire: The Masquerade - Bloodlines
My heart however, belong to the Baldur's Gate series.

Haha, I played the BG series a few years ago (absolutely LOVED them, btw). I'll admit, the 1st one got on my nerves, and I ended up just cheating my way to the boss fight at the end, just b/c I wanted to get started on the 2nd one so much... Bought Masquerade a month ago, played it nonstop for 2 weeks (did I mention my grades just aren't low enough, yet?), loved it, too.
I think I'll try to find Torment, but I'll keep the Fallout series in the back of my mind for later... I'm a bit more inclined towards fantasy settings, but after my next Star Wars fanboy phase, I'm sure I'll be more "openminded" towards other Sci-Fi games (don't start, I know Star Wars isn't technically Science Fiction, more like Science Fantasy, but I don't care; it's closer to Sci-Fi than The Witcher or Dark Messiah of Might and Magic).
My heart probably belongs most closely to KotOR (I way more than II, but I'd totally have an affair on I with II after a year of dating), then it's BGII, then probably Morrowind. Just because of the memories I have of them, not b/c they were particularly good or anything.
Anybody know the best/cheapest place to find PS:T, then?

I would suggest e-bay or Amazon. The game is out of print after all.
I was skeptical about Fallout too, when I started, but the game just drew me in. I was completely addicted.
I bear no love for KotOR, but that's probably because Star Wars never sat well with me.

Worth it? Heck yes. Deep story, massive emotional attachment, heart-breaking, gut-wrenching moments... yes, it's a must. You will enjoy it my friend, but all I can say is this: I hope you enjoy reading, seeing as PS:T contains the textual contents of the British Encyclopedia.
Also, like the person above me says, check Ebay and Amazon, but it's not bound to be cheap, seeing as the game isn't made anymore the people who sell it are usually putting it up for 50+Dollars as collectors items and such.

I can only second what has already been said. PS:T is, in my personal view, the finest RPG that has ever been created.
If you appreciate an in-depth, moving narrative, interesting NPCs with a story to tell, and well-written, oft philosophical dialogue than do yourself a favour and hunt down PS:T. It is very definitely worth it.

My CRPG love life includes:
BG 1 and 2 (with TotSC & ToB expansions)
Planescape: Torment
Icewind Dale 1 & 2 (with HoW & TotLM expansions)
Fallout 1 & 2
Other games, imo, depend on what kind of beer goggles you're wearing. But the above games are all babe-a-licious.

Why is it that whenever I finally get around to playing a new game for the first time,
I feel like playing Baldur's Gate for the second time...

You might want to check ebay. The lowest Buy It Now price sands at forty dollars while the lowest bid price is at twenty.
Hard to believe that I got this game for a total of seven dollars. Two for the game and five for shipping and handling.

You might also try poking into Good Old Games.
The service is not live yet, and I'm not sure if they'll have PS:T on offer. But, they do have Fallout II, so it would not surprise me if PS:T is close behind.

Haha, being the impatient SOB that I am, and needing a serious pick-me-up after realizing all the midterms I have coming up in the next 2 weeks, I ordered it off Amazon for around $50. I'm not gonna waste space by asking how I should play my char. (of course, I have no problem wasting space to inform you all that I'm not going to waste space), I've read everywhere about how Wisdom and Charisma and Intelligence are REALLY important, so I'm gonna play a Neutral/Lawful Good mage-type my 1st "real" playthrough. How many companions can you have at a time? Is there a way to maximize exposure to all of them, so you can help them all solve their respective "issues"? I know there's no set romance, but do you have to drag FFG around w/ you everywhere to reveal as much of whatever "romance" there is to that 1?

Well, in terms of power, they really aren't that important, but in terms of getting the most out of the story, those stats are invaluable.
You can only have six characters at a time (five NPCs and the main character) and I suggest that you use up all five slots.
Note that you will start as a fighter, not a mage, so plan accordingly.
To get the most out of your NPCs, talk to them often and explore different dialog options. They will have different things to say depending on your statistics as well as during different stages of your journey.
