I'm pretty certain I´'ve trapped humanoids as well with Azura's Star. Just be aware that certain creatures are actually larger than Grand.

im having trouble trapping humans, i have a staff that casts the sould trap(for 10 secs), i have black soul gems, i cast it, kill them in probally 5...

No they work like normal Grand Soul Gems except they capture humanoids (as well?). That means either your game is bugged or you missed the time...
