Do helmets still have their traditional effect of protecting against critical hits cause the item description for helmets is decidedly un-descriptive...

In 3E helmets do NOT protect from Critical Hits, actually nothing does protect at all...

I thought I read somewhere that you can improve the pathfinding in the game by changing the Path Search Nodes or something like either in the INI...

I don't think its fair to say the pathfinding is worse than Baldur's Gate. Sure its bad, but common, BG was rediculous. Not to say IWDII is very good...

Yeah, the BG2 Flayers were much worse.
There are certain Clerical spells and maybe Wizard/Sorcerer spells that can protect your party or atleast one...
