a better way to phrase my question might be

What exactly doe safe mode do that would allow these games to begin loading and is there any way I can replicate on my computer normally just for the gothic .exe

Eschalon 1 and 2 look right up my ally I just finished fallout 1 so ill probably finish 2 next. Arcanum looks cool but idk if Im a fan if the fantasy type setting they use idk why but i Kinda like the traditional medival type aspect of most games.
