Okay, I've done some more experiments trying to figure out the problem.

I tried installing IWD2 on a friend's lap top (just because it was another system that happened to be available) and it worked. No prompt appeared about any uninstall file missing.

I did check my D drive for errors, or tried ...

That was my next idea, when I can spare this computer from a bit of work; check drive D for any errors. I'm also considering going out and buying IWD2 again and trying to install that. That would let me know whether it is the disk or my computer for certain I imagine.
