Do you have to finish the main quest in Skyrim before doing the DLC Dragonborn?

I've have been playing this DLC so long my hair is starting to hurt.

I'm at the vault, talked to Elijah, got him to come to the vault. Killed him. Did not take the gold.

The reason I would like to know is because when I left Lothering, I was unable to return because it had been destroyed by dark-spawn.
Don't want to miss doing these quest.

DAO: In Redcliffe after the attack on the village I entered the Chantry to check on the boy that was locked in a closet and when I left the Chantry, there was a Quest Board there with several quest. I took them and then went to meet Teagan at the windmill.

Triss moves around a lot. During the morning she's upstairs, usually sleeping. In the afternoon she's downstairs with Alvin. And most of the evening she's at the Inn at Leuvarden's social events.

After rescuing Alvin from the kidnappers and sending him to Triss, my journal say's to go see Triss. I go see her and she wants me to go see Shani and tell her I gave Alvin to her(Triss).

You don't actually have to make a choice for this little swamp skirmish in Chapter 2. You can tell one or both parties you need to think about it, then just finish the chapter without taking part the battle, and the neutral path will play out for it.

The same starting dialogue can have randomly branching options that you may not have gotten the first time you talked to someone. You need to start talking to her about a witcher in town, then if you get the option to give her a gift, you need to give her a diamond or gloves.

You have to make a choice between scoitael and order in ch2 but it won't mean that you are locked into that for the whole game.. you will get to choose again.

I forget but either you defend the rebels who are on the island from the order or else you help the order kill the rebels..
