If it is just best possible fighter then it has to be a Kensai (dwarf, half-orc or halfling) or maybe a barbarian.
Go kensai for offense and barbarian for defense.
A kensai with spirit armour and chaotic commands is very solid.

Useful stuff against these types of foes:
Chaotic commands
potion of genius or mind focusing
improved haste
undead summons or mordenkainens sword (preferably hasted)
if you have a bard or a fighter/mage then mislead, prot from magic weapons is a good way. Combined with chaotic commands of course.

I think the assassin bonuses show up in the battle text. So watch the to hit rolls and compare them to a normal thief and I think you'll see a difference.

Well I now finished the game and I must say I had a great time playing through with this party. Give it a try, I dont think you'll be disappointed.

Still at it with this combo and I am having a great time. Yes they are now very powerful but in a nice way. I did remove the cap and playing these triple classers in ToB is great fun. I can recommend it especially if you are looking for an epic character.

And if you want a great thief with good fighting skills but no backstab go swashbuckler.
The pure class and multiclass can also be any race which can be nice but the dual has to be human.

My personal favourite thief is the swashbuckler. They cannotbackstab but they can dual wield and after a while they really hold their own in combat next to most fighters.
However your description sounds more like the assassin to me.
If you can live without the backstab though I can really ...

Lesser restoration and greater restoration should fix this this but it doesnt. Quite annoying really.

Or put the ring of human influence back on and use the rod a little more before taking the ring off for a pleasant surprise.

It must surely be one of the best weapons in the game. It is my personal favourite atleast.

Perhaps towards the end but it will atleast make SoA a little harder I believe.

You could try a party of 6 selfcreated PC's. Two tripleclasses and 4 multiclasses. That should slow the levelling down a bit perhaps.
Something like
FMC
FMT
CM
CT
FD
MT

4 mages, 3 thieves, 3 clerics, 3 fighters and 1 druid!

Just finished SoA and I still have a little to go before I hit the levelcap, which I removed btw. Yes the game was easy towards the end but frankly SoA with ToB installed is pretty easy. I like this group alot and the fmc is a cool character to play indeed.

Flail of the ages is one mean weapon. Very cool to that they have upgrades for it in ToB since it is about the first "great" weapon you can get and finally it is also probably one of the "best" if not the best.

Yes this group is quite powerful. But still it is fairly balanced. I am halfway through the underdark now but I still have no 8th level spells. The HLA's do make a difference but that is true for all parties in SoA with ToB installed. More so for smaller parties of course.
What I like with this ...

I am quite happy with this game so far. I reached the 3 million mark just now. Still havent travelled to spellhold, I am doing the quests first. I have completed everything except the unseeing eye. I am doing windspeer now.
I can see how the HLA will unbalance things so I have decided to pick the ...

If it is too easy then I'd say it is good that there is only one robe of vecna!
I have the fmc wearing that. Well so far sure it hasnt been hard but I think that had this been my first run through the game I would have died alot. I have done several quests and have 1.8 million exp points on each ...

I find games with small parties with dual-classed characters easiest as they become too high in level too quickly. Not so here IMHO. I think that it will become too easy at the end of SoA of course but that happens also because the game is well known.

Fighter/mage/cleric

I started a new game with a fighter/mage/cleric pc and a fighter/mage/thief sidekick. I figured this 2 char party will actually be more balanced throughout the game than a small party with dual or singleclassed characters.
Anyone who has gone through the game with such a party?

I am talking about greater restoration, the 7 level cleric spell, not the croll restoration. Just to avoid any misunderstanding I also believe the spell greater restoration was altered for ToB. For ToB it affects the whiole party so having a cleric with the shield of harmony and ring of free action ...
