I cant see why your buddy would be a poor schmuck for using a mac, since Nwn works just fine :) However, he will need a separate cd for the expansions. Afaik, only SoU is currently available for the mac right now... Ok, maybe I do see your point :P .
Mods and the like might work cross platform ...
