| | | Gangrel "Claws" Ive finished the game twice now, with a "Brujah" and aMalkavian"
I was just about to have a go with a gangrel but I would like to know if a gangrels claws are effected by your mele or brawlstats? I tried with low mele and high brawl but she seemed useless using protean and I gave up after geting slaughtered by brother Kanker hehe!
Any advice would be welcome!! |

Are a gangrels claws classed as blades therefore effected by the "mele" stat

| | | I believe the Protean discipline operates on the Brawl stat. I never found the discipline horribly effective, personally. It's much slower than normal brawl, or wiedling a Katana, without inflicting enough damage to make up the difference. But, perhaps, that's just my somewhat less than ideal graphic card at work. |

Thats just what I experienced, which is a pity realy! I would conclude that "protean" is a waste of xp! shame =[ |

| | | Okay, I kind of have to disagree with Protean being useless (though only kind of).
Protean does make use of the Brawl stat, so work on Brawl/Strength/Protean levels if you want it to be effective. The problem is that it can, if you haven't worked with it a lot, be unwieldy, and the damage gets good only at the higher levels of the Protean discipline. Since you are working in close most of the time I'd also work on Fortitude and Dodge/Wits/Stamina.
This is the first time I've really focused on the Gangrel clan, having run into the same problems described above, but I am now in Hollywood and the two armed uglies go down with a couple of hits.
Bottom line: this is a matter of working on your stats and adapting it to your style of play, but I think that Protean can be very effective (I'll see how it goes in Chinatown and other later areas). |

| | | *shrug* I'd hope the discipline is more effective at the highest levels. I've only played with the first three really, and I wasn't terribly impressed with it. My main issue, however, was simply how unwieldy it was. I imagine the extra graphic strain on my less than ideal gaming computer probably aided that. Still, it doesn't seem like the discipline is quite up to par with some of the others. I would agree, though, definitely train Fortitude if you're going to go the Protean/Brawl route. |

| | | Come to think of it, before the patch, and before my memory upgrades, framerates were the biggest problem with Protean. Without the framerate problem, it is not nearly as awkward. Keep in mind that the moves for Protean are nearly identical to normal brawling, only with claws attached.
I had the same sort of framerate problem with Obfusticate when used in the Society of Leopold caves. Hopefully that one has gone away as well. |

| | | I'm playing a Gangrel, and while my favorite combo is Fortitude/Fire Ax, I have to admit that Protean claws do impressive damage to vampire bosses, much better than even the fire ax, because the damage is aggravated. |

| | | Protean is slow Just for the heck of it, I upped my Protean to level 4 and good ole Beckett gave me a Protean bump up to Warform after lugging back the sarcophagus.
I conclude that Shodan's little exposition is a little bit off because my Animalism and Fortitude are like only 2 points. Accordingly, Beckett should have upped my weaker disciplines, but he just bumped my Protean.
This could be the same bug as the "Getting Knox to confess" trick at the Asylum. If you up your stats AFTER you enter the bar, you will still not be able to pursue the dialogue options.
Anyway I took my warform and tried it out on a couple of vampire bosses especially those from the chinatown quest. So far i had better outcomes when i wielded a katana with buff and fortitude.
It is simply too slow and I can't keep the enemy down with repeated whacks. Although the damage was pretty impressive, it wasn't easy to land a solid hit. Would sooner save my blood on beetles, wolves and bats. (animalism)
What a pity, because this is the only discipline that beckett will increase for me when I tell him that I am Grangel too. (yay, 20XP worth of upgrade) |

| | | protean is anything BUT useless
i mean , think about it with the bonuses you get , it had to be gimped a little and the dev`s decided to gimp it by lowering the attack speed. that doesn`t consist a problem for me at all. there are some bosses that i killed without breaking a sweat ( sometimes without even taking any damage at all and when i was taking damage , i had fortitude turned on so it wasn`t too bad )
you just have to know how to use it :
first of all , never use it in fights with more than one opponent , especially if they are pretty fast ( like the fang and claw brothers ) go for the usual katana ( or any other blade available to you at that point in the game )
second of all an opponent with celerity ( like brother vick ) can make a pretty short work of you if you use protean because at that point in the game , the bonuses from protean aren`t too awesome and you won`t get too many hits in brother vick unless you catch him in a corner
third : time your combos right if you want maximum efficience from the protean ability... for example , do whatever you can to knock-down an opponent and from that point the fight is won.... you just have to get a little back from him and then press S+left click so you can make that attack that knocks him down again but the timing is crucial if you try to do this
i`ve experienced the gangrel a lot and all in all i can say three things about protean :
1) pretty useless at ranks 1-3
2) you need pretty much skill to play in the protean form so that you know when to attack and how ( not go rushing into them and spamming the click button like you would do when playing a brujah )
3) never use it when there are more than 2 enemies attacking you because it won`t end up too good unless they are weak enemies that can be taken out with a single hit ( if you must , make use of the nightwhisp ravens to incapacitate one of them so that you have a little more space )
