The problem with dual-classing while soloing is that you're virtually powerless until that second class kicks in, one experience level above your old profession.
To the Righteous belong the fruits of violent victory. The rest of us will have to settle for warm friends, warm lovers, and a wink from a quietly supportive universe.
I'm with you Jerion, up the Irons!!!!!!!!
Well, with my Kensai/Mage I soloed as a kensai, and then as mage,
until I rescued Immie...
Only after I regained my abilities.
A little hard, but fun!!!!
(remember that when you dual to a mage you gain quickly some levels by learning the spells you gathered before)
For soloing a berserker/mage is easier.
My advice would be Kensai/mage, but explaining the reasons would take me a lot of time...
(I wrote RIVERS of words about it!!!
)
Maybe you could take a look at this tread, in which I already pointed out SOME other threads, or simply perform a search for
"kensai/mage" and be overwhelmed by the posts!!!!!

I used a F/M/T for my first solo attempt. I would highly recommend this class for your firt go. The backstab is extremely useful when your first starting out, you've got acess to stoneskin and other combat spells, as well as the fighting abilities so that you have half decent thac0 to kill things with
Melf's Minute Meteors is excellent to use in certain areas as well. My vote would be with the F/M/T, this class can cover every difficult bit in the game.
I soloed SOA only on my first attempt, if I was planning to go thru TOB with this character the weapons would be a little different. I ran around dual wielding, the Flail Of Ages, Com Fayer, and Celestrial Furt for backstabbing. Before getting CF I used the Defender Of Easthaven (IIRC) as it gives you some excellent protections. Armour was Robe Of The Vercina, plus a mix of rings/helms/bracers depending on where I was in the game and what enemies I was up against.
This character is VERY well rounded and (IMO) the best character to solo with. Of course there are other types of characters that I've taken thru that have been fun, but this was an excellent introduction to soloing

I soloed SoA, and am working on ToB as a dually Swash/Mage.
I dualed at 11 as a swash and then gained about six levels from reading scrolls. It's a little rough from there til you get to level 12 and then it starts kicking ass from there. necessary items are: Staff of the Magi, Ring of Gaxx, and Robe of Vecna. Helpful: Amulet of Power, Girdle of Frost Giant (and in ToB, Fire giant) Strength, Daystar, Bracers of AC 3.
Baldurdash has an excellent journal for soloing mages of any sort, and you can adapt it as needed. As a side note, for high level mages, esp soloing....best spell combo is Stonesking, Improved Haste, Black Blade of Destruction and Tenser's Transformation. Make short work of just about anything with this
Crits get into the 70's, with other hits in the 30's. BBoD is my new favorite spell

More thoughts on Swash/Mage.
At level 11 as a Swash, you have a -3 Bonus to AC, +3 to hit, and +3 to Damage. Definitely a help b/c if you're going to solo you're going to need to melee sometimes. With a stoneskin and the Staff of Rynn, I can take down most regular creatures. As a Swash, all your points should go into pick locks, and find traps, although I also put several into set traps and pick pockets. Ended with 115 in Find traps and Pick Locks, 60 in set traps, and 80 pick pockets I think. With the Staff of the Magi you can bypass most encounters if you want, as I had ToB installed, I didn't want to get too powerful for Irenicus
I still ended up lev 19 at the end of SoA skipping most encounters, and wiped the floor with Irenicus. It all comes down to the proper spells to use.

@Jerion:
The robe of Vecna is available if you have the bonus merchants.
And you should!!!
About the proficiencies: well, I didn't understand what was your choice in the end.
If you have a Kensai/mage, then again my suggestion is, take a look at the threads I linked (in the thread I linked above...
).
You'll find MANY answers.
