A Few Tough Battles Made Easy

Post by Dark Rook »

First off I regard a room full o` mind flayer`s and associated brethen a pretty tough fight.

Mind Flayers:

For an easy battle you merely need a fairly powerful wizard and cleric. A Mind Flayer, umber hulk etc.. all attack with magical weapons (the counter to this is protection from magical weapons (PFMW))
they also use psionic blast or confuse. (the counter to this is chaotic commands) to get your mage's thaco to a reasonable lvl you can use the fifth lvl cleric spell that confers thaco to another ( I forget its name!) with the hold, confuse, and intelligence drain threats neutralised you can nonchalantly eviscerate the little tinkers.

Kangaxx:

yet again tis simple.. you need a +4 weapon or better. If you have a bard, then yer laughing because there are several weapons of this calibre lying about, and they can wield them (I am ignoring TOB) Now just remember that imprisonment is an Abjuration spell and set your spell immunity to this. Demi Lich Howl can be nullified by Death Ward (lvl 4 cleric spell)....now kill him (Incidently, if you have TOB and have learnt spell trap you can use this...over and over gain!!)

Twisted rune:

Trap the point of entry to kill Shangalar, set a spike trap near to where Layene the mage appears, if you have the shield of balduran then you can let your lonesome fighter ignore the beholder and get to work on the rather pessy pair of baddies that still remain...SIMPLE

Dragons:

There are squillions of ways to kill these, but for those that don`t have memorised any lvl 9 spells, I have a tip.

configure a spell trigger to 2 lower resists and a greater malison, mean while have a cleric (with good Thaco) cast harm fire off the spell trigger then the cleric should hit the dragon. If the blow connects and succeeds at dropping him down to 1 hit point, yer laughing! SIMPLE

fraid most of these are common knowledge, or are posted in the gb strategy guides. as a contributor of the cheap and free twisted rune attack, cast project image and set up 5 delay action fireballs in each spawn point and zap the lich with azuredge, I have to let you know most of the serious and long time posters in the forum know these. but if you had discovered them yourself , more power to you!!! keep looking, and read previous posts for more fun tricks and tips, like the easy way to kill dragons, is to use spook, and other even more nasty and evil tricks..

Killing Kangaxx

There are 1000 of posts of how to kill good old Kangaxx,
I myself have tried lot's of them, but in my latest solo game, i was very supprised by protection from undead, never had used this spell before (now my faforite ;) ;) )
He just stood there taking damage from with what weapon i would hit him, no maze, no other very annoying spells, just nothing.........

It was just to easy to be true :p :D :p
I do not have the touch, nor do I have the power.

Damn, I'm an idiot ...

If I had known that prot from undead also stops his imprisonments, this would have saved me approximately ten reloads just yesterday. I wanted to whack him without spell immunity with Korgan in berserk mode, did that before without problems. So I used the prot from undead on Korgan to avoid physical attacks ... had I used it on my PC whom the talking head insisted to target first no matter how often and in which formation I entered, the issue would have been over at first try.

also a well known bug with prot from undead...

it will make you invisible to undead, rather than protects you...

so if your entier party is protected, you might get teh unkillable kangaxx bug, as no dialog is initiated so you dont get the second sialog and you cannot kill kangaxx...

make sure one char is out of visual range but unprotected by scroll to complete it.

I personally prefer using spell immunity abjuration with closest char, I also recommend death ward for demi lich howl, for the char who will get bragging rights, in fact the first form is harder to deal with as it is very tough and quite immune to most spells, and has the wonder ful chain contingencies that make lich fights so eveil...and kangaxx is immune to sunfire!!! ick...

i really recommend saving prot from undead scrolls for generic liches as you can whack them without problems...

I have tried every trick known to man on Kangaax. A surprisingly high amount of them worked, but I just stick to the old Vhailer, prot f. magic, Keldi's sword.

Unkillable Kangaxx bug, that's a new one to me ...

Although I'm not too endangered - being a fan of brute force and Korgan I usually use his berserk immunity and simply whack Kangaxx. :D

The problem in this case was that I left the room between the two fights to dismiss the other two party members and to make shure that the berserk mode starts exactly on time - with a lvl 12 group and a non-proficient fighter using the only +4 weapon I didn't want to waste time. The berserk mode runs out almost at the whacking point even if things go well. When I re-entered Kangaxx was in plain sight of the door and took the PC under fire. Again and again and again. I finally kicked my strat, got Edwin back into the party, protected him and ol' Kangaxx decided to attack Edwin instead of the PC. From that point on the rest is routine because he doesn't change to ranged targets anymore.

I found kangaxx quite easy after i decided to run away for a bit to heal and buff. when i returned, he was in sight of the door. i had fortunately put my abjuration-protected mages in the front with melee weapons, so i got them to charge while everyone else with 2 handed swords/missile weapons mashed him. Could've been worse, and was worth loadsa experience (let alone the beautiful ring...).

The quetion is level, chapter, difficulty.
Keldorn was level 11 ch. 2 and insane difficulty. I find it hard to believe that it can be done your way under those surcimstances.

my apologies to anyone who might think that this post is condescending. I didn`t intend it for seasoned players, I have just read many posts where people are asking...how the hell do I kill Kangaxx, blah blah blah.

@Dark Rook,

No need to apologise, you were just trying to help people out. If there is any fault with your post it is that it was not labelled as containing spoilers (although you would have to be hard of thinking not to guess that that would be the case). - Curdis !
