Yeah, don't worry too much about stats, levels, D&D rules etc. The personalities and character histories are much more interesting and relevant.
I'm working (very) loosely with 3 rd edition D&D rules, like those found in IWD2 and NWN, since they fit my character quite well. I'm bringing her back from the original DF Books, and she has of course changed a little, acquired new skills and so forth, and 3 rd edition rules accomodate this nicely.
But, as I said, rules, stats etc. aren't at all the point. Strange quirks, eccentricities, an intriguing or tragic past.. these types of things are what it is all about.
