I have returned to BG II ToB after a few years away, and here I am in level two of Watchers Keep trying to get into the Ice room. As I understand it fire will fix the "Ice Golem" "Ice wraiths" but for some reason I'm not making the slightest dent and keep geting told my weapons have no effect.
Go to the Wind room first (at the very top) and yoink the Wind scepter and use it to turn fan up to full blast (Keep doors open!). Then proceed down to Poison room (It's in SE of map...or the very most right room) and enter there, then open the other door in the Poison room (A key to it is in the library between the Ice room and Poison room - Again: Keep doors open!). Then open the door to ice room, so you can basically walk from Wind room, to Poison room, then to Ice room freely.
If you've done that, the Ice Room should be full of poison mist (the fan in wind room blows it from Poison room to Ice room) and now you can kill the ice baddies.
I believe you got mixed up (or your source did) - you use the ice room to kill Fire Elementals (Lure them from fire room into Ice room), and only once they stop spawning you can kill the Fire Giant.
