Getting into Baldur's Gate early Spoiler

My son found a way into Baldur's Gate before clearing the Bandit Camp and Cloakwood Forest Mines. He left the area above the city where the zombies are and travelled to the Baldur's Gate bridge. When the game loaded, he was on the other side of the bridge and he met the soldier who starts the city quests and could enter the city. Has anyone else done this? I am not sure he should continue on this path it may lead to to many unfinshed quests.

I don't remember the chapter progression, but without finishing the bandit camp he may not be able to progress to the next chapter anyway. In the worst case scenario, the game crashes; or he'll be stuck in a map. I suspect he may have to go back to finish things up, but as long as he has a clean save prior to activating the city/bridge, experimenting could be interesting...
