Turning Undead
Should you choose the path of a priest or paladin, your deity may grant you the special power to Turn Undead. Those characters that cannot turn undead include priests of specific mythoi and druids. The power to turn undead simply means that the priest can channel his deity's power to either terrify or destroy undead.

The character's chance to successfully turn an undead creature depends on his or her level (with paladins turning at a rate two levels lower than clerics). Each character is only allowed one attempt per encounter and must use the Turning Undead table to determine success or failure:

Take notice of the fact that certain powerful undead don't even have the option to turn when a priest is lower level. For example, a Vampire could not be turned until a priest is 6th level (or 8th level for paladins), and it would require a perfect 20 on a 20-sided die to be successful. You'll also see from the table above that a high level priest is a symbol of destruction when dealing with some of the lesser undead. A 12th level priest can outright destroy 2-8 skeletons, 2-8 zombies, 2-8 ghouls, 2-8 shadows, a wight, and a ghast with one turning attempt! Not bad.

Now, one thing that might be new to you is the fact that evil priests cannot turn undead, instead they have the option to command them. 2nd edition and 3rd edition rules treat this a little bit different, but not much. In 2E, any turned undead (T) will obey the priest for the time being, but any destroyed (D) undead will be completely subservient, obeying any command to its best ability until it is turned by a good priest, commanded by another evil priest, or destroyed.
