I usually kill him, or pick his pocket. I never got the idol from him legaly.
If you decide to kill him, save first, kill, then reload and leave out anybody that objeted. That way you dont lose any followers.

The maze of the damned is quite good. It only affects enemies, exept the zombies but they attack everything. I havent found the drawback yet.

The arcane staff (found it in a shop) gives 80 extra.

Your followers cant use schematics.

You should either take Pick Locks or Unlock Cantrip. So if you are mage, take it. Many things cant be done without it.

The Pick Locks skill is "better" mening it dont atract all the guards in the city when you use it for "Object Liberation"
