Or maybe you can consider continuing the story and go on with the roleplaying and that would somewhat decide which characters to take.

He is bringing the beer? Hmm, at least he knows what is needed to keep playing and have fun... Anyway, I agree with what Bruce Lee has written down and else go on what your feeling says, works with me a lot.

Maybe a simple question, but what character is your friend planning to play? You could make sure that the two make a good combo.

Same way, a little softing up with distance attack and the melee fighters to finish the job, don't need a mage to handle that.

How much differs cloudkill from the BG2 version? Not that much I recall, but not sure. I usually don't even use the scrolls. Have too much to think about.

You mean the Varscona +2 from Greywolf? Yep, definetely a nice sword, but hard to get if you don't take precautions.

Yep, the short sword of backstabbing in combination with Imoen hidden in shadows is great, just fun to see her stab around the wolfweres and run out of the room again. Used it a long time in BG2 as well.

Why the invisibilty for the three elvenrings? Although the One ring could make you invisible, but it is never mentioned about the others. And also something else, in the book the one ring would make the bearer invisible to any non-elvish, but not to elvish. I guess maybe that's too difficult to work...

I am not sure, but I thought Gil-Galad was at the Grey Havens with Cirdan at that moment?

Well, Cirdan gives the ring of fire to Gandalf and says that he will need it more, coz the people around him will get a morale boost by the influence of the ring (sort of) and as Cirdan won't leave his boats, Gandalf can put it to better use. So that's why I said, the things like protection from fea...

Make sure you have some (1-2) shooters (Kivan is a nice one and Imoen would also fit) in your pack, leave Xan where he is and one or two meleefighters. You could go for Branwen and Jaheira if you want them to be able to cast magic as well. Then take either Dynaheir or Edwin and you are complete.

You played BG2? I would say that being able to dualclass gives it an extra edge though. Besides that I am not a great fan of playing mage as I am more melee-fight minded, sometimes even forget to cast spells and such. Which is then cause for an extra reload...

Well, usually it goes like this with such quests. 1. You add Kivan, timer starts, you wipe out bandits, timer stops, Kivan happy. 2. You add Kivan, timer starts, you don't wipe out bandits (coz you are not interested, or coz you already done so), timer doesn't stop, you let out Kivan somewhere and K...
