and yes you need two weapon fighting and ambidexterity to improve your chances to hit with the double axe. anyone can use it but there are severe penalties.

it means the weapon makes more critical hits. A weapon that normally criticals on a 20 will crit on a 19 or 20. A weapon that criticals on a 19-20 will critical on a 17-20.

I've had some weirdness with my spells - my fighter/sorceror has magic missile grayed out when I right click on the character and try cast through the regular radial menus. There is no reason why I wouldn't be able to cast it, and other 1st level spells are castable. I think it is some kind of bug, ...

Nope....but check to see if there's an auto-save or something. Aribeth gives you a choice after you give her the final ingredient to go immediately to the ritual or to take some time to finish stuff. Not sure if it auto-saves or not before it takes you to the ritual.
