Super Basic question (Builds)

Guys,

I dont do PnP so the way builds are done is very confusing. Not only are classes mixed into each other, its not even uniform or consistent. Why do you build for x levels in 1 class then 2 in another and then 5 more in yet another??
I see it time and time again, but from laymens terms it looks like you're diluting your character. Wouldnt a pure build beat a hubrid?
If I never read these boards, I would be playing 1 class for 20 levels so:
Why do you mix them up, when is the right time, why do I see some builds where only 2 levels of a class are used. None of it makes sense.

Take a fighter 30 as an example. They have 16 fighter bonus feats. Eventually they have to take crappy feats. Also fighters get bad skills.

Now take a fighter 12 bard 1 RDD 10 WM 7

(notice it uses the minimum amounts of each class to get the sweet abilities..bard just to unlock skills and RDD...max RDD for +8 STR/immunities/armor/other stats/blindfight....fighter 12 for access to epic weapon focus/specialization....WM 7 unlocks all the crit powers of WM.)

Much better. They have the stat bonuses of an RDD and the STR boost compensates the AB loss of RDD + bard. Also more INT CON CHA from RDD. Also you can take able learner and then become skilled in tumble UMD and spellcraft. Your bard inspiration gives +1 AB. All that strength will be multiplied on critical hits to a higher multiple and threat range with weapon master.

Do you see how this synergizes? You get all you need from fighter and then the extra goodies from the other classes.

But you can play a fighter 30 too if you want. The OC is not so hard that you have to play a power build.

Generally, the first few levels of any class are more advantageous in terms of class features than later levels. After level 5, classes usually get less new class features, and so it becomes more viable to multiclass.

doesnt all that mixing up weaken the character's original build?
how does a hybrid warrior beat an all out warrior?
yes he will have more tricks, but for dmg output/hps is he still superior?

Base attack stacks between classes, as do saves (indeed, these tend to be better in multiclass characters). Class skills can be a problem, but for a powered up class that isn't the objective.

In terms of HP, it depends on the class. These builds are considered the optimum balance.

Ok I understand, but it seems like a lot of rule bending going on.
Why not just roll for stats and then pull all feats/skills into a pool and have people mix and match. In essence thats what is going on anyway, 1 or 2 levels of 1 class is hardly being that class
