Which do you prefer? Personally, I prefer this method of communication. You can be both spontaneous or thought provoking.

On chat lines you can also be spontaneous, and thought provoking. Here, it just takes a little longer for a reaction.

It would be sad to let a topic comparing chat rooms to message boards slip down the board with one posting.
The good thing about a message board such as SYM is you can be in a few conversations at once, where a chat room (IMO)is generally dedicated to a particular interest/topic...
We all have one thing in common here, which was the reason how we ended up a member of this board, but a 'room' such as SYM gives a little more space...
I vote for message boards - but only this one...

I used a chatroom before I discovered that all thoese people are intellectual inferiour - you can't talk to them about cheese, they'll just ignore you.
If you tell them you've just used Gate to kill rabits at Umar Hills - they *plonk* me

- weird people them chatters
Well really - I went from a chatroom to here, because this is more fun

Message boards allow you to think out your posts ahead of time instead of typing on the fly. IMHO It allows for a more harmonious outcome.

And as Xandax pointed out, a great number of chatroom posters seem mentally deficient.

I very much enjoy chatting on AIM, but I also like posting on message boards because topics can last longer. As far as more than one conversation going on at once type thing, I've had 5 conversations with the same person all at the same time on AIM. And my friends and I often have 10 or more going on at the same time in AIM chatrooms.

My experiences with chat rooms are very simple, discussions tend to get very silly on some occasions...

Especially when using mIRC like software, like Excursions, some people really get tired of all the silly scripts people are using.
But it's actually a nice addition to a message board, conversations could get more personal in (not too crowded) chatrooms. We have a built-in chat at our own message board, and really - you get to know each other
much easier...

Forums have less lag! I'm all for the less lag! Chat rooms are too disorgainized, and too chaotic to have any real good conversations. Also, Spam gets you kicked from the room! How can they do that to Spam!
