Help...I've got the curse - Vampirism. I need to get 5 Grand Soul Gems but when I try to "Quick Travel" the screen says "can't quick travel while taking health damage". Surely I don't have to WALK all over the country collecting gems.....what's the secret here ??????

You must be at the later stages of the curse. Hence you have become stronger but now take sun damage. Try feeding first then Quick Travel when it is night, just for safety.
