Freezing issues with game

hi there people.
I'm having a massive issue with Arcanum at the moment where the game is constantly freezing. On very regular intervals, the mouse is freezing in game, be it when I'm im the map window, inventory window, on screen - whatever.
When the mouse freezes up, the game freezes up... after a short while, it unfreezes and can remain so for like 5 minutes, or it can refreeze in a matter of seconds.
It is literally infuriating me to the point where the game may as well be unplayable.
My computer is well over the minimum requirement limit that's for certain. I've put in the latest 1074 patch thinking that may have fixed it. - Nope.
Also tried Safe mode for the game, plus windows safemode and both at the same time with still the same problem going on and on.
anyone experienced this problem? any help? (Yes all my antivirus+firewalls+antispam+antispyware stuff is off).. I have nothing downloading in the background either.
