Disabling homunculi/familiars.

Is there a way to stop caster types from auto summoning their pet creature that doesn't involve completely disabling automatic casting or the automatic use of combat feats? It's a little annoying because every now and then I come to conclusion Sand or Qara lost a point of constitution for summoning their familiar during combat, and letting it die.
Also, the familiar Kaji in MotB has character settings that are reset whenever it is resummoned. That means I can't permanently stop it from disabling traps that I intend to recover myself instead. I need the little imp to stop trap-blocking me.
Any thoughts?

Unfortunately I've not found one myself yet - but I'm very interested in doing so, cause I've found a bug where NPCs can "disappear" if you make some transitions and have "too many" Henchmen etc listed.
Twice, I've lost Khelgar because I've transitioned to the Harbor in NwN2:OC with 2 familiars/summons.
However, are you sure that the mages actually do loose constitution from loosing their familiars?
Haven't checked this myself yet, because if they do it is extremely silly that they are so summon happy

Losing points of constitution for letting your familiar die is normal, I think. It was like this in Baldur's Gate as far as I remember. They've only been summon-happy since a recent patch I think. No idea which, I missed out on a couple in between installations.

Yes, I know CON-loss is in the rules, but whether or not it is in the game I am not so sure about.
Especially given the "trigger happy" summons which annoy me as well

Well.. this is unrelated to the topic, but I did observe a CON loss. I didn't check out if it was permanent or not, I suppose it's kind of dumb that I didn't do that.
Got other things to worry about for the moment though. Classical philosophy doesn't read itself.

I would think it is temporary, cause Sand and Quara still have constitution points as normal in my game, but I have not used them much this time round, so I'm unsure..... would just be murder if it was permanent with the way they summon though.

Puppet mode?
That should work.
I agree with Xandax. Missing characters is THE MOST annoying thing.
It spells doom for your adventure.

Well, while that would work I don't feel like micromanaging my casters all the time. They should be able to fend for themselves.

Personally, I'm a stickler for full party puppet-mode control freak.... but:
I believe you can "unsummon" them right? While is perhaps not a direct solution, it might be a workaround if you make it a habit to manually summon and then unsummon them after resting. This should stop them from dying, unless you cannot unsummon (I think you can, I'm not sure) or unsummoning counts as a "familiar death".
I always play in puppet mode and never ever think that what familiars and animal companions with Rambo attitude and Tinkerbell consitution fit in my optimized party co-op, are worth summoning in NWN2. Only in NWN1 with my wizard and only having the cleric along do I summon the pixie.

Ah, that's where the problem starts. I can unsummon them, but within a minute or so the AI summons them back. Infinite times per day, as well.

**Splutter** HOW?? As I know, familiars and animal companions are "once per day" summons... Do they become "unlimited times per day" at the easier difficulty? (I play with "Normal D&D rules", instead of the "default NWN2 no FF" version).
