Recently I decided I want to play VTMB but I can’t find anyone who has a copy of this game locally. So my question is this. If I buy it online, do I need to worry about the game being prepatched with the latest official patch? I want to be able to try community patches and mods, so that’s why I’m asking this. Usually you need the first version of the game for community patches and some mods don’t work with the newest patches.

So if I buy the game online via download, is it already going to be patched or will it be the original first version? Or is it better to just have the CD version of this game?

I don't know if it will be prepatched, but you do not need to worry about it because all the community patches I'm aware of apply on top of the official 1.2 patch, not on top of 1.0

So the official patches only go to 1.2?

I really wanted the box though. I display my game collection on a book shelf. I'm gonna check Amazon.

Edit:
Do I need the CD in the drive to play the game? I'd like to use the CD only once, then keep it on my shelf, so it doesn't get ruined.

1.0 was rushed and therefore quite buggy. The 1.2 update released by troika fixed some of the buggyness but is still buggy. After releasing 1.2 troika went out of business, so no further official updates. The unofficial patches fix a whole bunch of remaining buggyness, but some of it is in files that would need troika's utilities/sdk to edit or in dlls that we'd need the source code to. 1.2 did fix a few things in such files, so the unofficial followup patches apply on top of that, not on top of 1.0

What the hell!? $149?!

Holy moses. Now I feel urged to sell my copy to you Americans and buy a new one for 9 Euro in the next local video game store. Or better, buy ten and sell 'em all. But it comes in a DVD-Box which kinda sucks if you're collecting REAL video game boxes (for whatever reason).

And yes, you can get a NoCD-Crack and play it with the latest community patches.

So can someone recommend a store for downloaded games? A store they've haven't had problems with? You know, the downloaded installer not working and such. It seems every other time a friend of mine buys a game online they have that problem.

Here is something I just read in Wikipedia:
Long after Troika was gone Bloodlines became available from online distribution systems like Direct2Drive and later Steam. The downloadable version on Steam however is not yet fully patched and it is not possible to apply the conventional patch from the official website.

I don't know if it's true but you better check out if it works with the official patches or is patched before getting the game through online distribution.

Well first, I never buy games from steam unless its a mod for a game I already own that uses steam. And VTMB is sold online by other stores, not just steam.

I may not be the mod of this forum, but please refrain from even mentioning cracks, hacks, and other things that could potentially deal with video game piracy. Though your intentions are clear and you aren't trying to pirate anything, we still have a 0 tolerance policy on piracy.

For all I care. I'm not versed in online distribution and I just thought you might want to know. Better than ending up with a copy of Bloodlines you can't patch, I guess. Anyway, thanks for the lecture.

Calm down. No one's getting banned. You should familiarize yourself with these rules, though, and follow them.

I don't rely much on games purchased via download. Last week I decided to purchase this game because I felt guilty of owning an illegal copy of it, downloaded via torrent, as I was enjoying it so much. It just took me a few stores to find a copy of it at a very reasonable price.
