They're the quintessential enemy in Dungeons and *Dragons*. It's tradition. Dragons always were opponents in fantasy /folklore, or at least mostly, and are widely recognized.

You mean, other than the fact that Dungeons aNd DRAGONS is based of the thematic game play of the Knight in Shining Armor with his wise Wizard companion slaying the dragon, collecting it's hoard and rescuing the fair princess?
If you must know, dragon were typically fire breathing and came in a variety of shapes and sizes. Until D&D created frost, black, metal, chromatic, shadow etc etc dragons... which then made the ancient red dragon, the fire breathing gigantic dragon breed, THE dragon in remeniscent(sp?) play/story telling in D&D.

The Red Dragon is the strongest Chromatic dragon (Chromatic meaning Red, Blue, White, Green, and Black) just by stats alone based on DND rules. The strongest dragon in DND is Gold Dragon for normal, and the Prismatic Dragon if you have the epic level handbook on you.

I think he was rather asking after the concept of the dragon rather than the stats, no?
But it's true, it's the most powerful Evil Dragon in de Monster Manual.
