What am I doing wrong?

Hi guys. I tried downloading mods and I put the files in the data files. I then tried running Morrowind and clicked on "data files" and checked off the mods to activate them.

When i went to make my new character, it came up to the new heads and then the game said "EEEH EEEHH!!!" (beep beep just doesn't convey it). Then an error message comes up and the game crashes.

What am i doing wrong please? I'm using Emma's mods and also Grog's mods. They seem very reputable. it must be me.

Any help would be appreciated!

What do you mean, you "put the files in the data files"? We need more than that to figure out the problem. Please explain exactly how you dearchived the mod, what mod it was, and where you put each kind of file (meshes, textures, etc). Also, tell us how much RAM you've got.

The files that i used are rar files. I went to

My Computer>c drive>Morrowind>data files and placed the rar files there.

I have plenty of ram.

I'm sorry that i'm not a computer wiz. please just guide me and i'll give you more info.

RAR files are archives, just like ZIP files. You have to dearchive them, to make them work. I suggest downloading WinRAR, which is free.

Remember to place each file within the archive inside the proper subdirectory of your Morrowind folder.

To Fable

Thank you so much Fable. I didn't realize Rar files needed to be dearchived. I'm used to games like The sims where rars go in automatically. Just for future reference, when there is a single file, such as this one, that doens't designate texture or mesh, does it usually go in the texture file? or sit outside the texture/mesh file folders in the general "data files" area? Thank you for all your help. I thought i had this down but it's a lot different from the Sims setup apparently. Thanks again.

Usually, the mod designer has prepared the entire folder tree for you. I really have not seen a mod where you needed to sort out the different files into their respective folders yourself. So basically, all you have to figure out is where to copy the topmost folder. Sometimes, the topmost folder is named "data files". That folder goes into the Morrowind installation folder. Sometimes all you see is a range of folders named "textures", "meshes" and so on. Then you take them all and copy them into the "data files" folder. If it is a single file, it is usually an .esp or .esm file. In that case, it goes into the "data files" folder, otherwise there really should be some kind of documentation with instructions included.

With due respect, I have, frequently, and I run over 200 Morrowind mods at a time. (Currently 242.) Many dearchive into a folder hierarchy under the mod's name. Many others dearchive into a hierarchy using the Morrowind/Data Files subdirectory. A few don't employ folder substructures at all; so you simply get all the files on one level. And a very few find some counterintuitive way of archiving the files. These last aren't necessarily poor mods, either.

That's why there are tutorials on dearchiving Morrowind mods, why many tutorials include the suggestion to open them manually. It's worth it to be careful and take the extra time. Just a slight screwup with one file in one mod out of many can lead to headaches with a game that won't start, or a game that starts and then arbitrarily closes at some future point, without identifying the problem mod. Then it's over to one of the major forums, to see if anybody can figure out which mod that referenced filename refers to...

Fable is totally right. I install all my mods manually. I learned that after screwing up a game in which I had spent months developing my character, companions, strongholds etc.
Also, it might be a good idea to read a bit about the mod before installing it. If many people have problems running it, you might consider it a no-no.

Sorry to burst your bubble, but i have dozens of mods installed, which all had to be put into the game manually. At a certain point i accidentally must have misplaced one or two files because i got all sorts of weird error messages when i wanted to enter a certain building. So i had to uninstall the whole bunch and start over again, since it's as good as impossible to figure out which file exactly creates the conflict. You must be thinking of Oblivion, Morrowind mods take a little more time to install.
