Somebody test this out, right now and put this argument to rest.

Does a cloak of mirroring bounce back area effect spells not centered on the cloaked ?

I would say no.

However, in ToB a cloak of mirroring bounces back nothing so there.

But will someone who has SoA just test this out and put this argument to rest ?

the soa cloak will bounce everything.

unless by some random chance every mage / lich ect directly targeted minsc who was wearing the cloak, every single time they cast an area effect spell. i have never seen the cloak fail to "bounce" damage.

unfortunatly i've got tob now so i can't teat it out myself.

I don't remember it bouncing back area damaging spells, only the spells directly targeted on the wearer. Plus, if the caster is inside of the affected area he will take the damage anyway, but the area won't move towards him of someone inside wears the cloak. It also does not bounce back spells that don't do damage (confusion, domination, etc) - remember too well waiting while all those spells wear off. So "everything" is definitely not true. However, I also got TOB now :D (I guess it was not too helpful ;) )

Yes! I remember that one... That's how my soloing Sorcerer actually defeated Irenicus... :D
...Or was it a disintegrate? Anyway, I'm pretty sure the Cloak of Mirroring killed Irenicus in my game... ;)

Anyone know if the change in that cloak is retroactive to SoA if you have ToB installed ?

The SoA Cloak does not really bounce spells, it bounces spell damage, including that of area spells.

Spell Deflection/Turning/Trap do not affect area spells.

What you're saying is that in tob the cloak acts as spell deflection rather than spell turning?

and, yes, it does return all non-stationary (chunk damage (ice storm, fire storm that sort of thing) and cloud affects like the sort affected by zone of sweet air, which doesn't include Horrid Wilting) area damage and also lightning bolts UNLESS they were bounced off a wall first

The Cloak does not function as either Spell Deflection or Spell Turning. The Cloak reflects spell damage, Spell Deflection and Turning reflect spells.

Xyx,

You are correct in ToB. In SoA, however, it DOES act as spell deflection. It isn't supposed to which is why it was changed for ToB, but it does (SoA bug). The original version made Beholders far too easy...

In the face of such determinism, I've decided to run another test. ;) I do not have ToB. No doubt all of this is very confusing, but this is how it works:
  • The SoA Cloak bounces back all spell damage dealt to the wearer, including that from area spells. It also bounces a few select insta-kill spells (such as Power Word Kill).
  • Spell Deflection/Turning/Trap absorb or deflect all targeted non-area spells, with the noted exceptions of Breach and Lower Resistance.
That's all there is to it.

Xyx,

Thanks, but to further muddy the issue :) in SoA, if you were the cloak, you also get the icon on your portrait that indicates you ARE protected by spell turning....

Maybe it only bounces if the spell is targeted on the weaer, not near him...
