Ever since I failed to nab the Soul's Hatred Bow at Chorrol, I've paid attention to the various kinds of Oblivion Gates I've encountered. I believe so far there are at least 6 different basic varieties, but I was wondering . . . how many kinds of Oblivion Gates are there? Are they randomly generated, or are they following some kind of pattern? I've shut down about 16 now, five outside towns (Kvatch, Chorrol, Bruma, Lleyawin, and Anvil) and the others just random ones I've come across. Some of those are identical to the others, some are different.

I think there are at least 10 different Oblivion maps, but only about 6 of them appear to be used for random gates. Spoiler:

I only know of four maps that seem to be unique: 1) the gate at Kvatch, 2) the gate you have to close for the count of Cheydinhal during the "Allies for Bruma" quest, 3) the great gate which opens at Bruma during the "Defense of Bruma" quest, and 4) two gates, one NE of Skingrad and one E of the Imperial City which both lead to the same plane of Oblivion.

There are also a variety of different interior maps of sigil towers, and I'm pretty sure I've seen different towers in different gates with the same exterior map, which leads to a large number of possible variations.
