the trouble with mods and other...

I have about 4 mods installed, one for interface, one for map, one for interface color and one that lets you start a new game quickly.
The trouble with what I have is that when you start a 'quick' game you wind up with FAR less than you would if you go through the starter dungeon, which means less money when I go to the Imperial Market district (my first stop, always) and then I wind up in Sack-cloth garments with starter spells and no mace. Should I just do it the old fashioned way?
Also, in the market district there's an oddly garbed assassin following me from store to store. Is that part of some mod or have I messed something up?
Also, oblivion crashed shortly after. And I have it patched to the fullest INCLUDING the unofficial patch. Maybe they conflict?
Thanks for any insight.
