Shifting for Fun

I know there are threads here on the Prestige Class, the Shifter, but they mostly seem geared to how powerful (or not) the class is.
My question is somewhat different. I have exported my druid from SoU into HoTU and she is now at level 16. So far I have really enjoyed the pure druid class. The array of spells are great fun to throw around, and I also do a little melee. My character is primarily an offensive spellcaster, rather than a pseudo fighter, rogue or cleric.
All of that said, purely from the angle of fun (rather than power) what is peoples' experience with being a shifter? I'm slightly intrigued by it, but on the other hand, I enjoy spellcasting a lot.
Note: I've searched through these forums and I've have checked out the shifter guide at Game Faqs (http://db.gamefaqs.com/computer/doswin/ ... hifter.txt) but I'm interested in fresh views simply from the perspective of fun game play, and also roleplaying.
If I did start taking levels in shifter it would be after reaching level 20, at which point I should have maximised my spellcasting potential, as far as I can tell anyway. Does anyone know more about this?
Thoughts?
