I'm at the second level and I'm trying to throw the boomerang at the fire, but nothing is happening.

Hopefully you've found an answer already, but if not - make sure you're in combat mode when trying to throw your boomerang, and press the ALT key to "attack" it. Otherwise nothing would happen.
