Improved Crits and Racial Monster listings

Hi, y'all, new to this forum.

I'm familiar with Improved Critical (or thought I was), which supposedly doubles the critical range of a weapon. I just received a weapon that stated something like Improved Criticals 1d6. What does that mean?

Also, as a ranger, I have been choosing favorite enemies without knowing what enemies fit under some races. Is there a listing of aberrations, outsiders, monstrous humanoids, magical beasts, etc., that I can refer to? I know I don't need to know for game play, but it would sure make the game more interesting if I came up against a mind flayer and said "Yeah, I got bonuses against that sucker, cuz he's a aberration!". tia

Improved Critical 1d6 means you do 1d6 extra damage when doing a critical (1-6 damage). I think this term is mostly (also) called Massive Criticals? But - alas, been some time since I've played the game and other D&D games.

I do not know of a specific easy reference for monster types, sorry.

Xandax, yes, the term was massive criticals. Thanks for the info. I assume that it means 1d6 in addition to normal critical damage... otherwise I wouldn't think it would be so massive! :D Appreciate the explanation.

I hope I don't have to buy a book to get a listing of those monster races... doesn't have to be comprehensive, just a outline of some of the more common monsters would help.

Yes it is extra damage on top of the multiplier.

As for monsters, then you could possible look at the The Hypertext d20 SRD (v3.5 d20 System Reference Document) :: d20srd.org which is the D20 ruleset - a free subset on the D&D rules (basically the basic rules without all the lore etc). You can see a llisting of monsters there and then click them to see their type, possible gain a better understanding.
I never played a ranger outside online roleplaying sessions, so I never cared much for the favorite enermy thingy :) But hope this helps at least somewhat.
