Roleplaying Unarmored Mage - no AC

So I'm trying to roleplay this mage/thief character I've started and I decided to go Unarmored (instead of Light Armor). But what I'm finding is that I get hit a lot and hard. Granted, I've just started so I'm not a powerhouse, but getting killed by a slaughter fish in 2 hits was a little sad.

So I've already installed the Dodge mod, so at higher levels I'll get some Sanctuary points that will help. And I have some low level shield spells, and am focusing on ranged spells to try to keep people at bay. Are there any other things I should be doing? I haven't started enchanting too much gear just yet, but that is another option. And I keep plenty of heal potions around to help out.

I've never felt less of a player than when I did the same thing. Couldn't get past the first cave in Seyda Neen, mudcrabs laughed at me. Rainfall damaged fatigue. (Okay, I am kidding about that part).

I never realized how much I depended on my little spellsword character's ability to hack his way out of trouble in the early levels.

Sorry, I'm commiserating, not helping much.

lol! I concur, Unarmored really is challenging. My character is at level 12 and only *just* beginning to explore Dwemer ruins at the default difficulty setting. And that is in the company of a pet wolf and Constance the Thief

My suggestion is to really pump up your Sneak so that you can avoid trouble, and when you have enough gold work on your Alchemy. A lot of those potions you can make will really help. You could also try some stat buffing spells with Restoration, such as "Fortify Health," "Fortify Attack" etc.

Try fighting with ranged weapon and keeping your enemies at a distance so they cant hit you so well. and look for an invisibility or chameleon spell

The only cure for Unarmored is to stay out of trouble. Use sneak, bows, lots of spells that'll keep the enemy away from you (Paralyze saved my hide more than once). The Amulet of Shadows maybe cheesy, but in your case it's just what the doctor ordered.

Your first priority should be to stop your enemies damaging you.

Levitate
Shield (preferrably CE)
Sanctuary (preferrably CE)
Summons (to take some damage)
Paralyse
Blind/Silence
Fortify speed (preferrably CE) - governing attribute for unarmoured

Second - harm your enemies to your gain. Absorb spells do very well here. As will command humanoid/creature.

You might also want to consider downloading a companion mod. Emma has nice companion mods, and some of them come with excellent quests.

And I suggest getting the unarmored mod. Gives you a percentile CE sanctuary based on your unarmored skill. So if unarmored is 100 -> CE sanctuary 50. I played a monk from the class list and it was fun!

My first post said that I already have the Dodge mod installed, which is what you are referring to. But thanks anyway. :)

Unarmored? The only time I used that was when I was trying to roleplay as a Lycanthrope (It was oh so annoying putting loads of clothes on my character after shifting back to my original form.

Well, the best way to tring unarmored or rather the way that I did it, is just start with a vaery high agility (which helps you dodge, thus partly helping the skill) and just fight weak opponents like Mudcrabs, Slaughterfish and the Kwama Foragers. Now, I will admit that it wasn't a wealk in the mark (then again I decided to take after the wandering lunatics and be partly mad, which led me to shun any magic and weapons) so it was unarmed and unarmored. This character was made just for the sake of roleplaying and so forth. No mods were used.

As you're playing a mage, I'm sure that your health is low and you probably don't have the agility that I did, so I guess you'll have to spend some jink and get a head start with training. After you get a few lessons training the skill should be much easier.
