Do certain weapons level with you? (Possible Spoiler)

Hi everyone,
First off, let me just clarify that I am very new to the Elder Scroll series and very new to Oblivion, so please dont flame me for asking what may be a very obvious question to some of the more seasoned players. ;)

I have been slowly leveling my character to try and get the maximum of 3 +5 modifiers during level up, and am currently only a level 6.

After hearing everyone talk about the infamous Umbra sword, I decided to try and acquire it. Without trying to spoil anything, I was able to eventually kill Umbra using some of the methods that some of the other threads have described.

I was suprised however, that when I actually picked the weapon up that the attack strenght was much lower than expected. I had heard discussions ranging from 28 to the low 30's. The attack strength of the weapon that I picked up however was only listed as 9. Now granted for my level this is pretty substantial but not near as substantial as the previous numbers.

I've heard other people talk about getting this weapon as low as level one and I didnt see multiple instances of this weapon in the equipment database, so I am assuming that there is only one instance of this weapon in the game and that its attack strength is based on Blade Skill, Strength etc.

Is that the case? My blade skill as a Mage type of character is only around 27 or so currently, so I'm hoping that this is the case. (The the attack strength is based on your current skill level) Or does this weapon have a static attack value based on your level when you acquire it? Since there was only one instance in the equipment database and due to the fact that it is a quest item, I'm hoping that it levels with your character. If not, would it be better to acquire it at a higher level to reap the full attack benefits of this weapon?

Thanks! :D

I believe that the attack rating is also based on your blade ability - so that as you gain blade ability you do more damage (though I could be wrong).

I base this on the fact that I have very low stats for blunt weapons - and all the blunt weapons I loot off corpses - high level stuff like Daedric Warhammers - have a very low attack rating (under 10) while the equivately blade items I loot off corpses have a very high atach rating (pushing 30 or so). Those blunt weapons also hit me a lot harder than would be expected for a weapon rated 10.

Thanks for the response. Thats a good point that you bring up as well. When Umbra did attack me with the weapon it absolutely devistated my health. I was losing large chunks of my health with a single hit. Which again suprised me when I saw an attack rating of 9.
I have heard rumor in other threads that the Umbra characters skill levels (Blade etc) were at 100. (Not sure how this was determined but) If this was the case, that would seem to make sense if her level was at 100 and was hitting me for 30+ damage each hit. That would also tend to mathmatically make sense with my level 6 character only having a blade skill in the high 20's and only being -capable- of doing 9 damage with that weapon.
Again, thanks for the response. I'm hoping (crossing fingers :D ) that I didnt mistakenly grab the weapon too soon.
Looking at some of the other weapons in the Equipment Database, take Thornblade for example: It has 6 instances in the database with damage ranging from 11 to 24. I am assuming that this is a weapon not necessarily based on Blade skill level but perhaps the level of your character when the weapon was dropped/acquired. A low level character would likely get the 11 damage weapon as opposed to a high level character getting the 24 damage weapon. Does anyone know if this is the case?

Thanks!

weapons don;t necessarily level up with you but as you level up skills such as strength level up. also to increase your level it's assumed you probably leveled up either you blade skill or blunt skill, etc. how much damage a weapon does is based on your strength and your skill in that type of weaponry. just like armor, the better your skill is in that type of armor, the more protecton it offers. hope this helps

Yes it definately does, Thanks. So if I'm understanding this correctly, as my Blade skill, and my strength go up, the attack strength of the weapon should also go up, is that correct?

exactly right.

A note to add: certain weapons obtained from quests are level based. In that if you complete the quest at level 5, it is weaker than completed at level 20. Apparently some of the best weapons in the game are modified in this manner, which is quite a design flaw. There is a mod out there that corrects this to make all these relative strength weapons level up with you :) However that downplays realism.

Thats an interesting point. I'm curious if this is the case with my Umbra Sword. I'm curious if that particular sword is still considered a quest item even though I did not activate and obtain it as part of the Clavicus Vile Quest. At the time that I acquired the sword, I was not high enough to activate the shrine, and therefore did not activate the quest. I acquired the sword by going directly to the source, bypassing the quest altogether. But to further confuse things, the weight of the sword is 0, similar to that of a typical quest item. :D
I guess what will really be a determining factor would be for me to get my Blade skill and my Strength up and see if the attack rating of the weapon increases respectively. Has anyone else acquired this weapon at a lower level (than required for the quest associated with it) that can confirm that this to be the case or not?
Thanks!!

It varies, leveled items cap-off at different levels.

Dark blade of Woe (the rejuvenated one, not the original) level 30

More difficult to say with MR, there are eight versions, the stats for the last two look identical though and are

Damage 19, enchantment Disintegrate Armour 15% for 7 seconds, Daedric Banishing

Never bothered with the Razor myself, pretty useless IMO, banishing the target means you can't loot the body doesn't it?

ok go here Oblivion:Oblivion - UESPWiki to see most of the item leveling stats. I found every item I was looking for somewhere, sometimes it takes a little looking.

The simplest answer if you're playing on a PC is to use this mod.

I can't understand playing on anything other than a PC personally, apart from lack of cash obviously.

Response

Yeah i have a big tv so i like my xbox better. Anyway responding to the thread as you get better with a weapon type and get stronger the damage increases. I have blunt and heavy armor as minor skills and they were horrible so I started leveling them up my protection is a lot better and weapons that were at 9 first are now at 18 or 19.
