***SPOILER*** Mage Guild Quest Glitch, Maybe?

I'm kind of stuck on a Quest right now. Maybe someone has a little help for it:

Up north of Anvil: There's a rogue mage I'm supposed to take care of for the lady mage at Anvil Mage Guild. I'm to talk to a particular woman at the Inn up there. Well, I've found the woman to talk to. She's told me to rent a room and she'll find me.

Now, I had already rented a room on a trip up this way PRIOR to getting this quest. So, the innkeeper still has a room for me. And, whenever I ask about a BED, he tells me that he hopes I enjoy my stay.

I've gone up to that room, rested....and rested....and rested. The woman hangs around downstairs and has yet to come up to talk to me about this rogue mage.

One thing I do notice in her instructions is that I'm supposed to pretend to be a merchant. So, I've taken off my armor and put on some plain clothes in hopes that I'd look more like a merchant.

So far, nothing's working. I'm sure there's something very simple I'm overlooking or missing. I need to somehow get this woman to come up to talk to me at the room.

In an attempt to work around this, I've returned to Anvil, slept in my own bed for more than 24 hours and then returned to the inn and asked about a Bed again. It's STILL available without paying anymore rent! It's like I have a permanently free room available now at this particular inn.

When I go to talk to the woman again, she tells me not to talk to her anymore until I rent a room...then she'll find me.

It's a vicious cycle!

HELP!!!

I somewhat recall doing this quest.

First of all, I hope you have a few different saved games so that you can go back to the start of the quest. I'm pretty sure the innkeeper asks you 'what are you doing here' (or something to that effect.)

Here is a quote from the walkthrough on the IGN site;
[quote="]Speak to Carahil and find out about a series of murders and kidnappings along the Gold Road. Carahil wants you to be the bait in trying to solve the mystery.

I need to speak to Arielle Jurard at the Brina Cross Inn north of Anvil.

Speak to Arielle.

I need to rent a bed for the night at the Brina Cross Inn"]

My guess is that you did something trivial, and messed up the order in which you talked to the different people involved in the quest.
It should be pretty cut and dry, good luck!

Yup, you get the option of saying you're a merchant in a conversation, though I am guessing it is not there for you?

Exactly! Although he 'might' have given me that option the very first time around when I was unaware of how to properly answer him. I can't really recall offhand as that was a few nights ago.

I suggest you buy her a drink ;) .

In all seriousness, I think you may have messed it up, if you cant tell the Inn Keeper you are a merchant I dont think the lady will come and talk to you. If you are on pc there may be some sort of console command with which you can force the quest to progress, however as I play on the box I am unsure of what the command would be or where one could obtain it.

Fond Memory with minor spoilers:
While ambushing the fine, frosty mage an imperial Legion Patrol man came to join our fight, on my side of course, however a very unfortunate guildmate of mine let off a poorly aimed fireball and almosted roasted the legion officer in his armor, after the death blow had been dealt to that cold hearted woman the Officer proceeded to cut down my friend and colleage, not your contact in the Inn mind you but the other guy outside. Got a nice mages hood out of it though, and a set of the legion's armor...

OK, I FINALLY got this quest to complete.

I'm not exactly sure just what finally triggered the correct conversation, BUT, I went ahead and attacked her down in the main room of the inn. After knocking her down several times -- she would only go to an unconscious condition -- she, for some reason, decided to quit fighting me and asked me what I was doing there.

Then, the innkeeper finally rented me a room after I told him that I was a merchant.

The rest played out pretty well. Except that my battlemage companions were sent to pushing up flowers by an Imperial Guard that was nearby the confrontation with the rogue mage.

Bottom line: The Quest is Completed AT LAST!!!
